Methods of improving free MEMORY

On Vista Ultimate with 2GB, I'm at the available Memory 50% reputed breakpoint. However reluctantly, have uninstalled various programs, but soon desirable installations offset them.
Researching the subject, including those on this esteemed Forum, usually entails means/methods beyond my competence.

Here's an illustration which has defied Support tech help from RETURNIL. Their instructions of doing another install and then a series of difficult-to-follow items leaves me lost in Cyberspace.
Of course I have used CTRL PANEL Programs to Uninstall. Result is a fleeting empty black screen insert. Tried same thing at Safe Mode; same result.

Because this program is a restoration after crash, there are extensive duplicates and that is primary reason to add free Memory by deleting it.

So now, at files needing defrag list, RETURNIL is shown as 5GB.
At Ctrl Panel Programs list, shown as 5.65MG.
At Start All Programs list, not shown (result of my delete efforts no doubt).

    Will welcome some ideas!

    Hi

What method did you use to resolve this as it "could" help someone else as this feedback is very useful and what forums are all about.

    many thanks.

I was going to touch on what you mean by this
    what breakpoint?

    Hi Halo:
Simplicity itself: Ran WINDIRSTAT and it did what multiple efforts at multiple locations could not do, Uninstalled Returnil. That gave me its 5GB of Memory.

And what I meant about the free Memory breakpoint is that someplace Online was a notation that less than 50% is when system slows down and other operations are affected. Consequently I try to stay above that.

    Hi Rodell

Cheers for posting the fix you used.

Vista handles memory vastly different to previous Windows and will try and use as much as it can in order to actually speed up your applications, as the old docterine really does apply now in that "unused ram is wasted ram". Vista's memory managment will give you back ram from its background running OS tasks when you need ram, majority of ram that gets used is trying to preempt what your doing or just done in case you run it again.

So good info on memory managment in Vista

Again cheers for the fix you did.

I believe he's talking about hard drive space, not RAM... since he mentioned uninstalling something that used 5GB. Nothing uses 5GB of RAM.

I thought so too... have many users that make the same mistake....

I was refering to this part of the initial post as Memory refers to RAM, which is why I asked on this as Hard Drives use Space.

Hard Drive space would only be an issue to speed if it was very low in the hundreds on megabyte region, when the OS will terminate system restore to hand back the GBs it uses, until you remove applications or added a larger hard drive.

@Rodell ~ I really wouldnt worry about Vista or any Windows hard drive space getting below 50% and would only concider it an issue if you were down around 10% free space.

Another trick to give yourself back some hard drive space is to delete all but the last known good System Restore point, right click your C: drive and choose Properties > Disk Cleanup > Files From all users on this Computer > More Options tab and under System Restore and Shadow Copies click Cleanup, this may give you back many GBs od space.. it will fill up over time again so just flush these points avery month or so.
