At late night that have authority to remove unwanted post such as the one that sat in the welcome for over an hour. There should be some sort of arrangement for the fighters to at least be able to remove post as such that.jmo. I don't know who finally removed it but thank you.

Well, I can't speak as to the 'mod' part of your thread, but 6 more posts and you will become 'One of the Few, The Proud, The Geeks!!!;)'

I theory there is an overlap of the mods so that there is cover 24/7 but as sometimes the moderator is also a malware fighter they do not always see it.

I understand what you are saying but this time the malware fighter "wasn't a mod and his hands were tied. Plus it was reported several times before I and TeeCee realized there was no one else here except that fighter. This is why I was commenting on having them allowed to remove post such as was there.

    Hi bt

I woke up and saw the reported posts in email. Someone had already removed them. It is very rare that spam of that nature (porn judging by the reports) gets through the filter. For the most part, spam does not stay around long. We also get a lot of it before anyone can even report it. While the porn spam is admittedly worse than the other stuff at first glance, it's just really not something you see that gets through. I'm not sure how that one did.

We rely on you all to report the posts you see and you do a great job of that.

That being said, no one can be here 24/7. Sometimes the reported spam sits there for a short time. It's going to happen.

I'll let someone else address the need for more moderators if they feel like it, but to my knowledge MA is not a proponent of over-moderated forums. He relies on the general membership to report spam or poor posts and then it is taken from there. I have to say, from my point of view, I think it has worked pretty well. A few spammers sitting there is not reason to change that.

I'll have to agree.. That post last night, was more than just spam.. It was quite graphic, and the entire post was a link. Totally gross, and worded to beat the band.. Sure, I am sure some of the guys got a kick out of reading it, but what if one of the newbies clicked onto it? Who knows what they would end up getting.. Or, even a younger person, I just shutter to think! I have to agree with BT here... Anyone who is in Malware should have had the authority to remove that type of post.. Oh, it was reported alright. but also read more than it was reported...rolleyes

Too many mods makes the place run bad. We are very selective and people we have know enough how we want to moderate. Adding a mod for late night EST might be an idea, we do have a couple casual mods who come in late at night. As Gloozit mentions, we have a lot of people here so we stand out as a site to spam. Very few moderate as efficently as we do, so on many forums they get away with it. All I know is by the time I get up, its already handled. What we need is a mod that tells you its already been reported because I get flooded with report a posts. Ill look into that.

  13. bigtrucks

    bigtrucks MajorGeek

I concur with you on that.
This is what I was trying to say in my original post. I'm not very effcient when it comes to putting on paper what is in my head but, I am learning and getting there. I'm not fully sure as to how and what happens in these situations, other then your mods, admin, and yourself have the ability to restrict and or remove them from the site but, if the fighters had some ability to at least Quarantine, if I may, so that other members that are unbeknown to the effects of these characters or as TeeCee mention the young(under age) who are VERY inquisitive to what things are/do, don't get caught in their traps,so to speak.
I know there are a lot of members and a lot that come just to check us out . What I didn't realize was that there were that many and I know we can't keep all the perps out.
Yeah I've been to a few myself. (No thank you)
Can you modify the post to where someone clicks on the report button that when a mod has gotten the report and looks at it they can temporarily block anyone from clicking on it until they have time to fully access it and take care of it.Just asking,
    Thank you.
Thank you for responding to my post.

BTW Where are the Thank You Buttons????

I'll keep a closer eye in the evenings. I'm usually up till the wee hours working working on Chem E, or coding.

Thanks, Adrynalyne, that would be very helpful. I see Bigtrucks made some very valid points.. A post should only need to be reported once, and then the function of that report abuse button for that post could be disabled once it has been reported.. That would be great..

As far as spam goes, that will come and go. However, the porn is going way over the line...in my book anyway, and just so you know, MA, I don't smoke LOL Thanks, MA, for looking into it.. All we are asking, is to have someone available to remove the smut when it is posted. How that got thru the filters, is beyond me...rolleyes

I also moderated several forums, and it is a thankless job at times, and also very trying.. This one, however, has a whole lot more members on it than the ones I was moderating put together, and I had pulled porn off of them too, even tho they were small forums... They were not immune to that.

Just my 2 cents worth, and I am not trying to be disrespectful.;)

Well BT, bringing on a mod just to keep the place cleaner is not productive as said mod will just get PO'd at doing the job and leave. It's a thankless job that has to be done and I've been scarred for life having to see that junk before getting rid of it.:( Good job MG's and thanks for a clean site!:)

Oh, I'm one of those that reports lots of spam so sorry if I fill up your inboxes.;):)

There is an ebb and flow to everyone's lives. Even if someone was designated to cover the late evening hours, that does not guarantee that they will be moderating every evening of every week. Some are on late at night ( as Adry has indicated ) and Halo ( being about 6 hours ahead of the US in time ) picks up things fairly "early" in our time zone. I have been on numerous times during the day when there are no other mod's on the site.

So, all in all, spam is usually dealt with in a "relatively" quick manner. That's not to say that there are not times when spam/porn/etc. doesn't slip by for a period of time.

This case is the only one in recent memory that has been an issue. And I attribute this to the dedication of our members who report these incidences.

I don't think the system is "broke", so I don't think we need to "fix" it. :major

@ All members of this forum that have a major responsibility. I just want you to know that you do a great job and I thank you for it.If I came across to you that your aren't doing your job I am sorry, that wasn't my intent. What I am trying to do here is to suggest of some way taking a lot of that stress off you. Thank You(where's the button?)

Hehehe, I have enough scars already to have a good character.;) Pulling posts and banning folks was not my idea of having fun on the web as a mod, I just didn't know any better ATT. I certainly don't need anymore 'character building' and definitely not that way!rolleyes:-D

    I said
I wasn't trying to get more mods but to give certain others authority.
Not meaning this the wrong way but, I was always told,"If you can't take the heat then why are you in the kitchen in the first place?" I understand there is a lot of stress to be in authority. Been there done that and I didn't like my head on the butcher block but if you volunteer for something for a job like modding then know the stress that comes with it before you start it. And if it is more then you can handle then, Yes get out of the "kitchen."
I don't wish any of these guys here to leave and that is why I was just trying to make it easier on them.

I've been a mod/admin for 7 years elsewhere now so I can take the the heat but most folk think it's fun and prestigious to be a mod but don't think of the responsibilities that position entails. I went in blind but was already sufficiently thick skinned enough to deal with the garbage of spam and deal with idiotic members. It's not for everybody..;)

I believe Laura is the first mod to be taken on in at least 3 years here, so this should show you that it's a special position and honour at MG's.:)

I guess we misunderstood each other BT, my brain works a lot quicker than my fingers so much of the thought process is not there. Oh, BTW no one who volounteers for mod position gets one as they are mainly glory seekers, they are chosen.:) This is the way things work at most sites.

I am a mod\admin on a forum. We have been getting the crap spammed out of us. 75 registrations from the same IP neighborhood. All posting garbage. It got so bad, we had to close the forum for 30 minutes to clean it up. And ban a few countries in .htaccess :p

I don't think we need any more mods. Adding more at this point can lead to more complications than it's worth. Ace, Halo, Phillip, Chas & BJ (although BJ has been busy with other things lately) usually catch most that goes on during the night as I do (just not lately) because I'm usually up pretty late. It is inevitable that some things will slip through and be visible for a while. We have on occasion had spam sitting in the lesser used forums for a day or two before it's caught. It's the nature of the beast. Even with all mods online at the same time things can be missed (overlooked) from time to time.

Members reporting posts is the most helpful to us AND the forum as a whole. While we like to keep things as 'clean' as possible, perfection isn't possible whether we are dealing with spam bots or disgruntled members. Y'all do a great job of keeping us alerted to problems, and we really appreciate it.:major Without a good member base this forum wouldn't be as good as it is. :) The key...report, never click a link from a non-trusted member and don't panic! Real life is always priority but our loyalty to MG's is next in line so as soon as we are able, we'll take care of any problems that should arise!!:cool

You have a serious hole in your security Dawg! I work at a fairly large phpBB board, 80K members last I looked and we had to ban 180 spam sign-ups in October and we thought that was a lot! Banning whole countries is not the answer!:-D Oh, if it was ukrtel then that's not a bad range to ban.;)

The moderators here are normally on top of things and we have trans atlantic coverage so only a few get through (no one is perfect)

Member reports alert them better than extra mods, I seem to spend a lot of time reporting and the only complaint i have is the 1 minute waiting period between reports but that is only a problem when we get multi-spammers.

All in all, I find MG to be one of the better moderated sites going . . . and I've been wandering around the net for a good many years. I in fact lurked around here for a long while before I actually signed up for the forum.

While I understand the desire to keep spam from detracting from a wonderful site like this (especially Porn-related trash) I don't see how it can be achieved in a better fashion then it is being done now - 100% is never possible. I didn't see the post that started this thread . . . must have been pretty raunchy.

Wait, I'm confused... So it's okay for any spam post to sit in plain view for any length of time as long as it's not porn spam? It's only if it is pornographic that it's important to remove it immediately? :confused

That's inconsistent, and I completely disagree. Spam is spam, and spam needs to go, regardless of what it is. If the spam is fleshy and graphic that doesn't suddenly make "the spam problem" any worse or more urgent. It's still just a spam post, and one that should not be clicked on. Just report it, and then stop looking at it.

Then watch your kids :) And maybe they do need to look at it, depending on their age, many of us loved looking at boobies by the time we knew about Playboy.

Anyhow, were one of the most efficient spam removers on the net on this forum and since I am sick of getting emails on this thread, expect to see it closed, since its a run around over nothing.
