Micophone not working

Hi,

I am so glad that this group is here - you have helped us with so many issues. New question for you - the microphone on our computer (desktop -
Windows 7) is "lost". The microphone is plugged in physically and when you tap it or even move a piece of paper by it, you can hear that it is on but we can no longer find it on the computer or control panel. We can't use it on Skype or to record. However, it seems like it is constantly on. Can someone help us fix it? Thanks.

 

When you go to Control Panel -> Sound and click on the Recording tab the microphone doesn't show?

 

To extend on mdonah's suggestion of going to Control Panel > Sound and click on the Recording tab. If you device isn't showing up you can try right-clicking on an empty area and select either "Show disabled devices" or "Show disconnected devices" but I would find it strange if it showed up after selecting one of those options since you said you could hear it.

When you tapped the mic where you heard though your speakers, did you have any kind of application open for that?

Is your microphone being connected via USB or mini jack?

Make sure you have the latest audio drives for your sound card/motherboard.

That is what is really strange. Ctrl Panel/Sound/Recording shows Realtek High Definition Audio "not plugged in" but we have checked again and again and it is plugged in. The sound from the mic is like when you would tap on any live mike or blow on it - the hollow sound that it is live. No application is open that uses the mic.

Not sure about having the up to date audio drivers - how would we check?
