I have a Hitachi (6GB) Microdrive and I am trying to put a 1Gb partition on it (camera use). My Camera (Nikon 5000) may be able to read the lower (1Gb). I doubt it will work but it is worth a try... Any suggestions (keep it clean) or help much appreciated...

How are you trying to do this? ie are you connecting the microdrive into a USB reader connected to an o/s.

    Cheers

Yes - the camera does not recognise it (and probably won't) but looking at the camera spec it says that it can work with a 512/1gb microdrive. soooo, I thought if I could partition the thing it might just fire up.. Am using a card reader and USB connection, of course partition magic/windows partition manager does not pick it up - am a little wary of using FDisk so was wondering if there was another way??

There is a prog called OnBelay which can help you to format your microdrive through XP. My understanding of this, having spoken to a friend of mine who overcame a similar issue to yours, is that OnBelay will partition your microdrive with a 2Gb FAT partition (as fat can only support that size) but once done you stand a fair chance that your camera will recognise the drive.

You may be able to format with FAT32 using OnBelay thus allowing the whole drive to be used BUT the camera may not want to cooperate.

If you format with FAT and want to reformat back but are having difficulties then use SwissKnife V3 to get back to normal.

Apparently, many digital cameras have issues with storage >1Gb.

As I said above a friend of mine told me this on the phone, so I am merely the mouthpiece here.

    Hope this helps

Hi again and thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Great programes but still could not partition the drive. Formats without a problem - swiss knife reads the drive but will not let me partition it....most of the widgets are not active(?). Oh hum back to the drawing board.

    Some more 'maybe' useful info.

I am not sure if a microdrive can be partitioned with several partitions, if you find that this is possible, then let me know.

Otherwise, I think the progs that I posted are a solution to large midrodrives not being detected by digital cameras.

Just out of curiosity even after using OnBelay, was the microdrive not detected?

    Good Luck

Sure - it detected it just fine (see att) but like you said it formats it in one partition and it would not give me the option of selecting anything else. I think the ebay thing might work if the comp reads it as an internal drive...hmmmm dunno if I want to go that far but it is another solution - I'll keep trying and thanks again for you help.

PS stuck a screen shot in for your info..

    Pincher

Format your case using FAT32, FAT or FAT16 will not work with cases.

Sony Cases and Dell Cases are known for formatting problems.
