"Microphone" Pre-Purchase question(s)..

Hey gang...

A friend inquired:

"...(teenage/14-15 yr-old daughter) would like a microphone for Christmas because she's interested in starting to sing. I suppose I need a microphone with speaker? What do I look for? And what would be good brands of equipment? I'm not looking to buy something extremely extravagant or expensive but something with sufficient professional quality. Any advice?
