I received an email from microsoft today saying that beta wont work in a while, so i thout i would uninstall it now and deal with any problems that arose rather than leaving it to crash.
I think the excel files are ok, i just changed them to open with microsoft '97.
The word processing files however end with .docx which i can't see how to change, if i open with with excel '97 they are filled with seemingly nonsense characters.
Can you advise me how to deal with this.

    PS
Whenever i open a word document i get the message
"The windows registry has reported that one or more required files are damaged or missing. To correct this problem, run the word setup program."

i installed it borrowing a disc from someone which i no longer have any advice?

Thanks very much for your time

I've downloaded openoffice and it works well, do you think i should only use this and ignore/uninstall my office '97?

    Hi

What Office beta version where you using BTW?

As for Office 97 you can leave it installed, but Open Office is still currently being developed all the time so has alot of compatability with Office 2007 and 2010 file formats so if it works well for your files then continue to use it.

    Hi

Sadly your old version of Office is not compatible with the Office Compatability Pack that removes issues with the Office 2007/2010 versions, so if Open Office opens these files ok, have it save them in a older office format 97-2003 or 6.0-95 file type.

Problem maybe if you had used any of the features of the newer Office that is not supported in the older versions and this can cause the type of junk text you are seeing, but do try Open Office and see if you can save them in any older formats
