Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service Not Turning On

While searching for something else (shut down Windows Installer) I was prompted to open Task Manager to Services. Curious I browsed the list of what was running and what was not. Under 'WinDefend' - Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service- I saw that it was Stopped. I always thought that was ON! What's going on here? So I double click WinDefend and in the next window I click 'Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service' and click START in the next window that pops up. But then I get an error box that reads: "Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if the are not in use by other services or programs." Can you explain this? And why is the program on manual? Shouldn't it start with Windows?

By the way, I was searching for Windows Installer because of another error msg I got when uninstalling Adobe Bridge: "Another installer is currently running, which must be closed before installing this product. " I had nothing installing.

I always think hackers are doing this.

 

My Windows Defender is manual because I have something else installed.

I'm using Microsoft Defender and Malewarebytes.

Malwarebytes has disabled Windows Defender.
