Im having touble with Excel and im hoping someone here might have a solution. Theres this PC, it had Excel XP on it (the whole office suite actually) Well when you would double click an excel file to open it, it took about 45 seconds or more to open. Well this person wanted office 2003 so I upgraded them, didnt change anything. If you open excel alone, then open a file it works fine. So I got office update, ran windows update. No good. I started researching the problem. To try and narrow down what might be doing this, I stopped every srvice that was system from running including Symantec antivirus. I deleted all files that were in any xlsstart or excel start up folders. I made sure no add ins were selected. Nothig worked. I tried uninstallong and reinstalling excel with no luck. Im at a brick wall here. I cant figure this out. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks

I could do that but its only Excel that does it and the hard drive isnt clicking, it just sits there. Its windows 2000 also which isnt plaugued by the problems 98 had as far as I know. Thanks for the recommendation tho I will try it.

Had similar but with Word 2003 last week ... opened via a word doc and it took around 30-45 secs to open... only think I had done was to update to Office2003 SP1, so did a repair of office.. cleaned registry and rebooted now all back to opening within 10secs ( dont think my intigration with Acrobat and Word helps much to the opening speed )

nah im well aware of the problems that can cause :) This isnt my machine its a user at work so I cant do anything til tomorrow. Symantec is corporate edition 8 I think. Just the virus scan, I tried disabling it but didnt speed anything up. Maybe ill try the repair.

hey wookie, just making sure because I'm not sure.. regarding NAV, does this have a plug in to office and if so, is that what you disabled?

I stopped the SAV process from running completely, I couldnt find anywhere to disable a plug in but I did exclude xls, xla and xll extension from the auto scan. The only option you get when you install SAVCE is Outlook/Exchange Plug in. When I open a file nothing happens for 45 seconds, no CPU usage 99% at system idle, no hard drive clicking. Really has me pulling my hair out., but if I open Excel first then open a file it works fine.

I always try to take a stab at some of this, and this is a guess/idea.... What does your file association for the Excel file types look like. You need to go through motions of editing the "open" command. I have Windows2000 Pro w/Office XP and for Excel the command shows

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE" /e

with DDE enabled, the DDE Message string with "[open("%1")]" (no quotes), the Application being (no quotes) "Excel" and Topic being "System".

Ken3's solution actually worked for me last week on a machine.

Two other things to look at that I found researching that issue are:
    - Under Tools--> Options--> View tab uncheck Startup Task Pane
    - Under Tools --> Options -->.General Tab - Make sure the default location actually exisits.
