I have a small home network (3 people 4 computers) and would like to have Exchange running so we don't need multiple accounts to read mail anywhere in the house.

I seem to recall that Exchange will run on XP Pro, but I can't find any details. The network is only P2P inside the router and I really can't afford a dedicated server right now.

Will Exchange work, and will you point me in the direction of HOW to do it. Dear old Microsoft says Yes, but won't even tell me which book to buy. Oh well...

Thanks in advance for any help.

You would need Windows Server I do believe to run Exchange. If wanting something that does not cost, there are Linux solutions out there like ClarkConnect that you can set up as a mail server. You would just need a box that you are not using for anything else.

You can check out Clarkconnect at http://clarkconnect.org It is a really easy solution to set up.

Exchange is an old product that go switched to OUTLOOK. This will require a windows server, and then buying exchange server. Then making sure that all the machines are running XP PRO. Then again, you'll have to do some configuration within the exchange server to allow this to happen. Not cost effective if you are on a low budget.

You CAN check you email via the internet on each computer.

I can check my comcast email via the internet: comcast.net then clicking the Mail icon. I only do this, when I'm away from my home (or work) computer longer than 1 day.
