I have downloaded Microsoft Fix it Center version 1.0100.0 on to my PC (running Vista HP SP2). When I try to install or run the application I receive the error message in the attached jpeg file.

Has anyone else had this problem with this programme? Is there a solution?

That is not much to go on.

Why do you need the FixIt Tool?

I provided the only error message I received when I attempted to install this programme.

It is an application that can be installed for use when you have a problem. Therefore, you don't need to have a specific problem to have this software. Plus, I do have a problem with my computer. I was going to see if the Fix it Center had a possible solution.

I'm afraid that doesn't help much. It isn't live support. It's requires me to write a question that Microsoft have thought of. I've tried several but none match their questions. I cannot think of any other ways of asking why Fix it Center won't install. It would seem that I will not be able to solve this particular problem.

Again, what is the problem that you are trying to solve? And not the fact that you can not install the pseudo fixit from microsoft.

Thank you for your advice. I have installed MSXML 6. I then downloaded and tried to install fix it. When I tried to install fix it I received the same error message. I have had a look in Add/Remove Programs but MSXML 6 isn't listed there. However, when I installed MSXML 6 it said it had installed and there were no error messages.

If you have not done it, try doing a repair install. It will not wipe anything out, but it should fix any problems.

I had considered that option. It looks like I'm going to have to find those discs.

The results you posted from the other thread are just the SMART tests. Actual surface scans are needed to find bad sectors, or errors on the drive. Your hard drive hitting 57C is a red flag, I personally don't like to see a platter drive operate at more than 50C max.

Looking at your previous logs, and all the hassle you are having I will agree that a "Repair" sounds like a suitable option.

You could use the trial version of Disk Sentinel to give you an idea of what's going on...

Sorry, have to disagree. 57c is only 135 degrees, 50 is only 122. The drive is just getting comfortable at that temp. Now of course, if it starts hitting 165 or higher and stays there, then you have a problem.

Just curious: what are acceptable high temperatures? One of my temperatures goes up and down between 71°C and 81°C; that looks awfully hot to me: not something I would want to touch with my hands!

Someone posted a link to a Microsoft KB about Windows Explorer stopping. I did all the disc scans it recommended. None of those scans reported any errors.

Likewise, I scanned for malware using up-to-date versions of avast!, Agnitum Security Suite, Malwarebytes, and SUPERAntiSpyware. They all reported a clean machine.

As there seems to be no agreement about suitable temperatures, I don't know if that's an issue. The PC in question is a laptop, which I believe don't cool well plus I often use on my knees so that won't help the temperature.

What scan should I be using to check the surface?

Can you tell me more about Disk Sentinel. People's opinions, I find, are better than anything I might find searching the Net.

    Thanks for the ongoing help.

Now, that is too hot. You want to keep them under 130, drives usually should stay under 115, due to they use the air from the platters spinning to cool them off.

Get one of the USB collers that your laptop sits on. My wife has one, for when she sits in the bed to do work on her laptop. Keeps it really cool, and keeps it off of the bedding.

I have just discovered that Disk Sentinel is not free. I have run the tests that can be run in the free version. Those tests that can be run in the free version all report that the hard drive is in excellent condition.

I really am struggling to find a solution to why Windows Explorer keeps stopping and restarting. Therefore, I have been searching the Net for a potential solution. I have come across a web site called Fix Windows Explorer with SpeedMaxPC. It offers a free download called Windows Explorer Repair Tool. It can be found here: Fix Windows Explorer. Has any one any experience of using this application? Does it look safe to use or does it look like something to be avoided?

It is hard to say. Explorer has been crashing since the days of Windows 95, and even as far back as Win3.x, the desktop would all of a sudden crash, and no trace of why. Doubt even MS knows why Explorer.exe just up and stops on its own.

It gets to the point, that when it is nonstop, you start removing stuff like AV, firewall software, not running other programs in the background, uninstalling those that you suspect, just to find the answer.

You could though look through the event log to see what is happening, or using the Sysinternal tools like Process monitor, to see what is going on. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545021
