Is the only reason that Microsoft's java is recommended to be removed because they don't support it, as a result of Sun Microsystem's legal victory?

I didnt have any issues with having MSJava installed but with the emergance of malware being such a pain, and MS due to loosing the legal aspect with SUN and not updating their version, its a wise option to remove MSJava and go with Sun Java as its updated on a regualr basis to combat any malware or otehr software issues.

MS's Java has not been supported for quite sometime now, and has been known as a major security problem in the MS Operating system, check out the Malware Forum advise by MA & Chaslang. I agree with Halo remove MS Java and download the Free Sun Java version 5.07 full support and notices here at MG when updates are available.

I agree, the MSJVM is a hole but, if you do remove it, just be careful on what software you purchase! Our child company spent a fair chunk of change on CAD software that required Java, but would not recognize Sun's version. They now have to live with this vulnerability, as the bean-counters don't want to have to purchase another package.

I did not realize that there were programs out there that just required MS Java and would not work with Sun Java, thanks for the "Heads Up" on that Mada.

Just wonder as I have not tried it if you can re-install MSJVM back if you have software that needs it? ( Just a thought Mada )

I do still have the download packages for MSJVM 5308 and its last update of MSJVM 5310, a MS FTP did have them still at one point but I cannot find them, so maybe its not removed in the server shakeups.

What version of CAD are you refering to? We use 2005 and run it on Sun's Java I think but, I am not sure.

    We run XP pro.

If you could let me know for sure I will look into it as we are thinking of upgrading to CAD 2006 and this is something new to me.

    Many thanks.

Like Milty said, some things won't work without MS Java, for example, some or all Sigmachat functions. Sun Java may not run some of these programs. I had no further need for Sun Java, so I dumped it, plus i tired of updating it. Then I reinstalled MS Java and am quite satisfied. Of course some users may need Sun for certain functionality.
