Thanks, Nick. The more I'm reading about this patch, the happier I am I never installed it. MAYBE sometime in 2005 I'll THINK about it. HAHA!

Or maybe I should just forget it altogether and wait until Bill Gates releases his REAL new baby, LONGHORN? We're to expect this late 2005 or 2006 (?)

"The company has billed Longhorn as the biggest advance for Windows since Windows 95. The operating system features three major upgrades--a new graphics and presentation engine known as Avalon, a new communications architecture called Indigo and a new file system known as WinFS."

In other words, totally new OS. Of course we could all learn Linux, too. LOL! There's a thought. ;)

I want you take a look at that list, count the number of programs on that list and then TRY to count the number of applications available for the windowsXP platform. Now remember that if a program doesn't work as expected it's because the vendor didn't follow the guidelines of development properly. Now tell me that you're happy you never installed it. You should be unhappy that you install ed any of the programs on that list.

Don't blame MS and SP2 please. Blame the vendors. I'm sure, also, that patches will be released for those applicatoins on that list.

I like how Pinnacle copped out, little bastards.

So instead of offerring a fix for it, they have you disable an important feature. Maybe they are going to make a patch, but it doesn't sound like it from their write up on it.

Well, that certainly is taking the easy way out. Fix your installer.. shouldn't be that hard.. Does the program work with DEP enabled after install?

  8. Adrynalyne

No, that particular app has DEP crashes with regular use.

List is getting out of date, NOD32 have patched up and works 100% with A64's and DEP, as have Yahoo Messenger.

I hear the V5 Zonealarm is having realy problems. I bought it a while back, and was incredibly disapointed, anyways they just mailed an update out reccomending users reverty to version 4.5 due to the SP2 issues.

Forgive me if I'm confused but This SEEMS to be a MUCH shorter list than what was published before...so does that mean those programs aren't effected because SP2 has fixed something?

OR those previously affected programs have their own "patches" now so there may be glitches but we'll know to run something when we go in and open them up for the first time after installing SP2???

(it used to have PageMaker, MusicMatch jukebox, Nero Burning ROM, Works Suite 2004 [the last 2 I have so that's one reason I'm asking],

It means the 3rd party companies are patching.

No doubt there are 5 times as manay programs as that list shows with issues, but its early days yet and not all have been reported.

Im just glad i dumped Zonealarm all those months ago. Seems they are losing their way with this new version

too true Nirvana..... 3rd party companys have has a wake up call..... I agree about ZA they are branching out into areas they really need to leave alone and concentrate on what they did best.... a back to basics if you wish!

Okay - thanks. Bear with me: :)

What about people who didn't know about the previous list and what programs have patches?

    For example:
Nero Burning Rom -- I have it and love it. Do I find the patch NOW (don't have SP2 loaded) and install it or install SP2, then find the Nero patch before using Nero again?

I would assume it's the latter, because I don't know all the programs that are coming out with patches and neither would everyone else.

Thanks for being patient with my questions. ;) I have waded through the other threads and copied and pasted a lot of the info into documents. As I mentioned once before, I'm supposed to be "in charge" of this for work so I want to know this "program" stuff for sure.

Answer to my own question maybe:
    In the thread:

Re: what is an xp service pack 2?

    Adrnalyne says:
So I check for updates first -- I guess I just have to check for updates on all my programs to be sure everything is up-to-date and not wonder if they were or weren't on "the list"

    Hi pegg :)
The list is shorter and vender's for sun java and style xp have got new updates to there software and all is well. PATCHES for other software in that list are being addressed and i myself am beta testing zone and will inform the forum at a later date as to how there patch is working out

Huh? Not necessarily. I don't want to get into a political debate here, but guidelines aren't flawless and if you read the anticipations of Symantec and Zonelabs on their websites, to name a few on the list, neither expected any problems with SP2.

And with a new operating system on the horizon next year, that most people don't even know about, I thought I'd point out how it's all going to be a moot issue in the not so distant future.

    I am.. so far.

    Where did you get that?

I'm sure, too. Without applications to run, an operating system is useless.

Show me what proof you have that Longhorn will be out next year?

    --Oh yeah, you don't.

    Expect 2006, or maybe longer.

Oooh! I just love the quoting game!

Do you think companies are going to publicize they f'ed up and didn't listen to MS and/or do any testing?

That would be kind of like Symantec putting on their website that their product is bloated, full of holes, and highly ineffective against brand new viruses. Yet we all know its true.

Your overall tone hints at it, but doesn't say it explicitly. I thought you meant the same, from reading your posts.

Well aren't you the smug one who obviously gets a good thrill out of putting words in others mouths. Look, you may work for Microsoft, but that doesn't make you omnipetent.

Why don't you actually READ what I wrote before you go attacking everyone who has an opinion about Microsoft. I SAID in the first post 2005, 2006 (?) and in the second post, on the HORIZON next year, which is exactly what I MEANT, too.

Ya know, I've been reading these forums a good 2 months now, joined it for a month to maybe be of some use, but I gotta tell ya.. some of you are way too full of yourselves. You serve no one but your own egos.

Longhorn will not be in 2005.

It is not even close to out of alpha.

We are almost in the 4th quarter of this year.

Have fun proving that one.

Don't post your opinion, if you don't want someone else's in return.

Such a hard concept for some to understand.
