Microsoft Office 2007 installed but will not load/open

I used to have Microsoft Word or Office on my computer, but it at some point was deleted from the system. However, my resume is a Word document and I need to update it because I am moving. I downloaded the 60 day trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 and it seemed to install properly, but when I tried to open Word from the Start Menu, nothing opened. I tried opening my resume directly, and still nothing. I tried restarting the computer, uninstalling and reinstalling it, and still nothing.

As a result, my fiance went out and bought Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 for me, but we still have the exact same problem. It seems to install correctly, but when we try to run the programs from it, nothing happens. The Microsoft Office Diagnostics that installs with it will work, but when I run it it does not find any issues. My fiance tried running the configuration for it and received the error code "Error 1923. Service 'Office Source Engine (OSE) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services." We know that means that there is probably a previous version of office on the computer causing the problem, but we deleted the trial versions, as far as we know. I also ran CC Cleaner and the registry program on there to try to remove any last reminents, restarted the computer, tried again, and it STILL will not work.

Any help with this would be VERY much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Perhaps this will help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926704

Oops, I see plodr already posted that link.

Is a direct contact with MS by telephone possible here, since you have new software?

    Someone said
I absolutely agree... except... delete "finally". Do it. OpenOffice (OO) is, as noted, "free", and it handles all the latest MS Office stuff and a lot more besides... you can read and write all the MS formats (I keep files in OO formats and save them to others when sending to someone who needs a specific format - either that, or save as PDFs for sending or posting). Take the purchased Office stuff back for a refund... even if you get stuck with a "re-stock fee" I think you'll be ahead of the game.

Can you tell I love OpenOffice? It's not perfect, but it suits a lot of people better than MS Office, the price is right (can it be better than free? only if they pay you to use it...) and you don't have all the hassles with registration, et cetera.

Thanks for the help so far. I went through all the steps in the second Microsoft Support link and did what I could there. One thing I noticed when going through the registry files: The support was having me delete anything related to Office 12.0, but I also saw Office 9.0 and Word files in the registry. Could they be causing the problems also?

I also tried to download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility, but when i try to install it I get the following four error codes:
    - Internal Error 2908: 121634B3-2F4A-11D3-ADA3-00C04F52DD52
    - Internal Error 2908: 121634B5-2F4A-11D3-AD53-00C04F52DD52
    - Internal Error 2908: BF1C5C32-2FC9-11D3-ADA3-00C04F52DD52
    - Internal Error 2908: 121634B6-2F45-11D3-ADA3-00C04F52DD52
    And the program doesn't install.

I'm going to try out the Open Office program, though continued help with my original problem would still be appreciated. Quick question about OO: If I'm going to be sending files saved from it to other people, do I need to save them as a certain type of file. I'm going to be using it to send my resume to potential employers, and I'm sure it won't make me look very good if they can't open it properly! :)

Open Office is good but I'm sure you want to get your Office 2007 installed, since you paid for it.

Anyway, if you install OpenOffice, it's word processor shows Word 97/2000/XP as a choice for file format when using the Save As command.

By the way, a portable apps version of OfficeOffice.org can be installed on a flash drive. You might want to use it that way now if you are inclined to view it as a temporary solution to your current problem. You can get the portable apps version of OfficeOffice.org at http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable. Using it this way requires no installation whatsoever in Windows; it runs entirely off the flash drive.

The PDF (Adobe Acrobat portable document format) is pretty much universal, and (so far) virus free, so that's what I almost always send, unless someone specifically requests another format. Under the "File" tab, you'll see Save, Save As, PLUS: Export, Export as PDF, and Send. So you can save a file in many different formats, as well as exporting a PDF or just emailing the document as a PDF attachment. I'd suggest asking the recipients if they want something other than PDF and saving accordingly. I don't think you can EDIT a PDF, so be sure to save it as a regular OpenOffice file before you do anything else!

In you first post you said" we deleted the trial versions, as far as we know"
How did you delete them? through add/remove programs or just deleted files from the hard drive?
I had this recently and ended up re-installing MS office to then uninstall and start again.

I'm not so sure. I'd say "maybe" or even "probably". Personally, I'd rather have the $ back, but your mileage may vary.
Probably does. I wouldn't bother to save a file as .docx, since the "new, improved" Word can open .doc files anyway.

PortableApps is (are?) great, and I have the Mozillas (FireFox and Thunderbird) loaded on my USB stick, along with OOo and a few other must-haves (Total Commander, puTTY, Notepad++)... but I still put OOo on my computers. For one thing, they all read/write USB drives, but they don't all run Windows.

And a quick word of caution: some USB flash drives are SLLOOOWWWW. Last time I looked, there's a spread of around 10X in speed - one of my clients was complaining about how long it took her to backup to her USB stick, and I found that her computer backed up to my USB stick in about 90 seconds while it took over 15 minutes to hers - and both drives claimed to be USB 2.0 compatible. I did some searching for speed tests, and sure enough, her drive - I forget the brand, now - was right at the bottom while mine - a SanDisk - was near the top.

I deleted them with the Add/Remove Programs option.

I ran into a similar situation recently with an app that was also "Add/Remove"d - it turned out to have left behind both some registry entries and some data in user space. The user space data was deleted manually, and the registry entries found and removed with CCleaner... then the (re-)installation worked.
