Microsoft Office 365 Updates

I am not sure even how to phrase the question I have so please bear with me. Obviously, I shall be happy to provide any clarifications or further information.

I have Microsoft Office 365 for which I pay a subscription. It used to offer me updates on a fairly regular basis. It has not offered me updates for months.

Several days ago I opened Word on one of my two computers and it said it needed an update downloading. I didn't want to proceed then. Every day since, when I've opened Word it said there was an update.

(There was no mention of an update when I opened Word on my other computer.)

Today, I decided to do the update. I opened Word and there was no mention of an update.

Why has Microsoft Office 365 stopped offering regular updates? How could it tell me for the last few days it wanted updating but today no longer does?

 

There are a few possible reasons why you might not see regular updates for Microsoft Office 365, or why the update notification might disappear. Here are some of them:

• You might have different update channels for your two computers. Update channels are the way that Microsoft delivers updates to Microsoft 365 Apps. Depending on the channel you choose, you might receive updates more or less frequently. For example, the Current Channel receives updates every month, while the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel receives updates twice a year. You can check your update channel by going to File > Account in any Office app and looking at the Product Information section1
• You might have already installed the latest update without realizing it. Sometimes, updates are installed automatically in the background when you close and reopen an Office app. You can check your version and build number by going to File > Account in any Office app and looking at the Product Information section. You can compare your version and build number with the latest ones for your update channel by visiting this page2
• You might have disabled updates or changed your update settings. You can enable or disable updates by going to File > Account in any Office app and choosing Update Options. Doing what you recommended in your first bullet point I have updates (at least on the PC I'm currently at) set to update automatically.

Therefore, they're probably happening in the background.
