I have a weird problem. About a week ago, I started having problems with my microsoft office - I can't download e-mails anymore. Error message says it can't connect to server. I have cable modem. None of my settings have been changed; ingoing (POP 3) & outgoing (SMTP) mail server information are the same as always and are correct. I've also seen that this isn't an isolated problem. I can't update my virus protection because I can't connect through the program to the internet. I'm obviously able to connect through explorer to the internet, but that's it. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Virus maybe or something I or my husband have inadvertently done to change settings?

Thanks as always to everyone for their help!

On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
Select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
Select POP3, and then click Next.
Under User Information, do the following:
In the Your Name box, type your full name the way you want it to appear to other people.
In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail user name followed by @carolina.rr.com.

Note The domain name will differ slightly, depending on where your service is located. This example is for Charlotte, North Carolina. Your sign-up information or Road Runner customer service can provide you with the exact domain for your area.
Under Server Information, do the following:
In the Incoming mail server (POP3) box, type pop-server.carolina.rr.com.

Note The server domain name will differ slightly, depending on where your service is located. This example is for Charlotte, North Carolina. Your sign-up information or Road Runner customer service can provide you with the exact domain for your area.
In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type smtp-server.carolina.rr.com.

Note The server domain name will differ slightly, depending on where your service is located. This example is for Charlotte, North Carolina. Your sign-up information or Road Runner customer service can provide you with the exact domain for your area.
Under Logon Information, do the following:
In the User Name box, type your user name provided by Time Warner.
In the Password box, type your password.
Select the Remember password check box.

Note You have the option to have Outlook remember your password by typing it in the Password box and selecting the Remember password check box. Having Outlook remember your password means that you won't have to type your password each time you access the account; however, it also means that the account is vulnerable to anyone who has access to your computer. Use strong passwords that combine upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Use a strong password that you can remember so that you don't have to write it down.
To verify that your account is working, click Test Account Settings. If there is missing or incorrect information, such as your password, you will be prompted to supply or correct it. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
    Click More Settings.
On the General tab, under Mail Account, type Road Runner.
Click OK, and then click Next.
    Click Finish.

    Notes
Do not select the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box.
Unless specified by Road Runner, all server and address entries are typed in lowercase letters.

I did all you said, but it still won't work. I decided to verify that i had the right domain name, and I do. I just don't understand what happened. I've never had problems with this because it's such an easy step-by-step process that even I can do it.

Any other ideas? Could it be some kind of virus?

I do have virus software, but I'm now getting a message that it is out of date and when I try to do an update, it says it can't find the server to do the update. I've never had this problem before...
