A friend of mine received a computer as a gift and it has Microsoft Office on it. We are not sure if the system came with it (unlikely) or it was added later. We do know that he would like to do a complete system restore and not lose Microsoft Office in the process.

Is there a way to remove the program to disc, and if so, where would the license key be found? The computer is obviously used and none of the cd's were given with it. Not trying to pirate anything, just trying to find a way to keep the program so it can be reinstalled after the restore.

    Thanks for all answers.

Unfortunately what you would like to do isn't possible. MS Office can only be installed or reinstalled from licensed disks. The best that can be done, if there are problems with the computer, is to enlist the help of the experts here to get it cleaned up and running satisfactorily.

Actually, if you find out what version of Office it is, you can use the "Digital Download" version of the installer package to re-install, then all you need is a key. I'm sure someone on this lovely forum has a program to extract the key from office?

BTW what version of Office is it?

personally i don't like commercial software like Microsoft office especially in this kind of situation, if things get harsh or expensive use an alternative. but as far as the product key goes it's probably on the case somewhere written on a sticker with the windows serial code

and if all fails or gets complicated and expensive do what i do. use an alternative. openoffice.org is a pefect replacement for microsoft office it works pretty much the same and is compatible with microsoft office files. the best part is that its free. but you won't get the eye candy everyone loves from microsoft office but they work pretty much the same.

Well, if the system is operational finding the Office key is no problem, just install Magical Jelly Bean. but where is this 'Digital Download' you mention?

They're hard to find but they are there and on the Microsoft site, they're available for 2010 and 2007 as far as I know.

This was my suggestion to him but he seems to want the "name brand" even though OO is much better in my opinion.

Good enough for me. Thanks all. Will advise him that he should use OO, again, and tell him it is not really prudent to try and save Office. Not sure why he would want to in all honesty....does not listen even though I went to school for computers and he is a hack..lol. Thanks all again.

Yes hard to find the direct links at times but in the main if you get the trial for the exact version you have installed now then you can use the licence key to activate the full product, works for Office 2007 and 2010 from my tests.

OO is great and has most of the functionality of MS Office, he can also install OO and try it out as it will open all his docs up fine, then just try the trial of his version of MS Office and enter his licence code and if it works great if not they have OO.

What is the Office version, would need full SKU name, eg. Office 2007 Home and Student, Office 2007 Professional etc
