    I am running XP home, Microsoft Office 2003. When i try to open Outlook i get this message;
    "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." I have done a repair on Outlook, deinstalled and reinstalled all to no avail. :cry

    I am the admin. I have booted in safe mode and gone into main admin made sure all permissions were correct they were and still nothing. I have no viruses, adware, worms etc.. as i am a fanatic on keeping my computer locked down. The only thing i have done lately is install and deinstall Fax pro and of course all the new WOW updates:)

    Please help!!!

    Hi

    Just a quicky to try, In Outlook click Tools > Options > Main Setup Tab > Data Files > highlight the Personal Folders and click Settings, then make a note of the PST thats in use, eg. it could be Outlook.ps, Outlook1.pst etc

    Then goto this location and XXXXX = your user name ( the folder maybe a hidden one so you will have to un-hide it, or just change the XXXXX to your user name and past the whole location to an address box in IE or a Folder.

    C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

    right click on the PST that was noted to be in use earlier and choose properties and make sure the Read Only box is not ticked, if it is un-tick it and click apply.

    You also should be able to access your outlook email setting within control panel. I'd either create a new account through the control panel applet, or just create a new .pst file there.

    Ok, 1st thanks for the tip about mail in control panel never would have thought of it. :) 2nd I went through all the steps mentioned, rebooted and Outlook will not open and I still get the same error msg. I then even booted up in safe mode went thru and "refreshed" all permissions and still no go. :cry

    Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!!

    Thanks for taking the time to help:D

    Hi all,

    I am still having the same problem, when i try to open outlook normally still get error msg, but when i do this it open and runs fine.

    I select run - type "outlook.exe /a" and enter and wala outlook opens with no error msg???

    I would still love to know how to fix the main problem, but as long as i can access outlook in this way it is not as urgent. Thanks for all the help.
