Microsoft Product Key

Following a PC death I now have some of my system backed up onto a hard drive.

I am trying to locate the MS (Office) product key from that hard drive to authorise.

Produkey will only find the key for the machine I'm working on, not if I get it to look at the hard drive.

Could someone please help me out and suggest the best folder to direct its attention to (or a better program). I've tried 'Windows', maybe I need to get more specific, but not sure where these encrypted keys are held.

    Thanks in advance!

Using Nirsofer's tool? Going into File>Select Source with the old drive connected to the new PC?
    Selection #2??

Hi Foogoo, thanks but it doesn't find it I'm afraid, either on selection 2 or 3. I have also tried yet another portable hard drive with the complete contents of my previous desktop and it doesn't find one there either. I am assuming it requires being shown to a particular file location within the drive in which it then searches.

Sorry re-read it.. you have "some of the files backed up" I thought you were pulling the drive out of the dead system and connecting it to the working system via a USB, ESATA, or slaving it in another system.
I'm pretty sure the product keys are in the registry, so if you're not using the 'system drive' but a drive you have 'some files' on, unless you have the registry, you're out of luck.

For general system info as well as product keys for Microsoft Office and numerous other software that is installed on any computer, you're best bet would be to download and install the Belarc Advisor software. It will also give a listing of all installed programs.

You can get the Belarc Advisor software from right here at Major Geeks. ;)

    Good Luck! - COMP

Yes, true but I also now have the HD running via a caddy, at least at present..

    Still it can't find it.

I found the following page that suggests where the file is located, but on navigating to it, it tells me that the file (OSPP.VBS) is not saved in a registry format.

So, thanks all, but I guess I'm out of luck on this one.

Thanks Comp but it appears to only show my the keys for my local machine, not external drives.

If it is not Office 2000, you can try to recover it possibly by trying this. Office 2000 keys were done differently and not recoverable as I discovered quite a few years ago.
Let's say the broken hard drive is R.
    Look for this R:\Windows\System32\config
and copy it to a USB stick. Use Nirsoft to scan that file.
