Think they'll give me one if I trade in my Win95 / Win 98 / Win ME disks?

What kind of specs would I need to run Vista?

That's not bad, I'd probably get Premium as it averages at about £126 sterling for the full version which is pretty good.

    Also -

A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:
    • A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
    • 512 MB of system memory.
    • A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.

Seems my pc is ready to take on the challenge of Vista Premium, should be no problem. :)

Yeh most do, heck I'm only running an AMD 3200+ 64bit and 1gb memory but even that can handle most things that are thrown at PCs :D

Home premium and ultimate requires a tv card for the "full benefits" of "Windows Media Center".

Other than that, my aging athlon xp 3200+ is running vista great!

When MS says upgrade from XP does that mean you just pop in a disc or do you have to install Vista and lose everything you already have on XP (that is if you don't make a backup of your data).

400 USD for Vista Ultimate, damn that's expensive... I don't think I'll bother upgrading for awhile, I'm fine with XP for the time being.

Yes on lappy, 64bit version needs only Audio drivers, going to see if I can fine some compatible ones or edit some .inf files to get some to load, 32bit version works well with all drivers found, both now in RC1 form run great, I could use it everyday for work purposes.

    Some bugs left but!

@Lionrampant ~ YES the upgrade will install and upgrade your XP to Vista with no loss of data, well you may have some applications and drivers that need updating for Vista compatability but running the compatability wizard will highlight them.

Still the best senario for installing vista would be to use the XP files and transfer wiz and clean install Vista as its core programming is vastly different to XP.

OK. I thought you were testing it on the laptop, just wasn't sure. Good to know. Thank's. :)

Can I clean install Vista with just the upgrade disc? Sounds like the installation of the core programming means buying the Vista Home package.

I have a feeling that this Vista is going to be another expensive rouind of re-upgrading my 12 month old computor that I bought to run xp on, which replaced the one I bought to run 98 which I bought to run 95 after buying a state of the art? dx4100 for win 3.11 which seemed much faster than my latest one, or is it the unwanted, remove at your peril junk, they keep adding on to the software that slows everything down on a computor which ran swiftly on the old software? I'm afraid if microsoft made cars they would not have got past ms dos before they went bankrupt. I am seriously considering Linux, it seems to be coded by enthusiasts for the general public to use at a moderate cost that does not require a new computor for every upgrade, neither does it clog up the system with immovable unwanted frivolous junk that eats away at system resources like a donkey eating strawberries, regards Bob. (well its been a quiet day so I am hoping for a few opinons on this subject)
