Microsoft Update Failure

Just recently I've been having a consistent problem installing an update from Microsoft Update (Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update KB2572067). Please see attached thumbnail Screenshot 1. After the update fails, and since I have automatic updates turned on, I get an available update icon notice in my system tray, which starts the whole process over again until the update fails again. I downloaded this update from Microsoft Update and attempted to manually install it only to get a message that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'netfx.msi' in the box below." (See Screenshot 2). I have .Net Framework software 1.1 to .Net Framework 4 extended installed. Is this something absolutely essential to have on my system? If so, how can I surmount this problem? I downloaded and configured Microsoft Fix It Center and ran it and it didn't find any problems. Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

ScreenShot002.jpg basically tells us that the installation is corrupt.

.NET Framework is required for certain applications to run, but no it is not required.

You can either ignore this or try the following first:

Download and run: .NET Framework Cleanup Tool 6.0.3790

    Source: http://www.aboutonlinetips.com/repair-remove-and-uninstall-net-framework/

If that does not work, you can try removing all the .NET framework installations from the list in this program: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 7.2
See the download links under this icon: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

Reboot, clear windows update history cache by running this small batch file:
    Code:
    net stop wuauserv
    cd /d %windir%
    rd /s/q SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    pause
Or if you would prefer a GUI try the "Repair Windows Update" with this tool which I would imagine will have same effect: Tweaking.com - Windows Repair 1.4.0
See the download links under this icon: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

Now try downloading and installing the following: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)
Be patient as it typically does take a few minutes to install. Also let it run unhindered.

I checked out the comments for dotnetfx_cleanup tool.zip, and it didn't sound too promising. And as I already have .Net Framework 4 installed I'm following your suggestion to just ignore .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update KB2572067 until such time as Microsoft patches the corrupt file. Once again I already have .Net Framework 1.1 to .Net Framework 4 already successfully installed, so it would seem in terms of .Net Framework installations I'm pretty well covered.

    [RESOLVED]
First I downloaded “dotnetfx.exe” from Microsoft Update Center and put on desktop, then downloaded “NDP1.1sp1-KB2572067-X86.exe” also from Microsoft Update Center and likewise put on desktop. I then ran dotnetfx.exe (which will install a clean version of .Net Framework 1.1. which contains an uncorrupted version of ‘netfx.msi’). Rebooted, then ran NDP1.1sp1-KB2572067-X86.exe. Afterwards I received a successful installation notice of .Network Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update KB2572067. Obviously not all computer configurations are the same, so I hope anyone who is having this same problem will be successful. When you go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs you’ll see the .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update.
