I keep getting this update through automatic updates even though I have installed it, literally, 30 times in the last week. It shows it has 0 bytes in it when it comes up in the update. I have tried installing it from the Windows update site as well as through the automatic updates. I have tried restarting my system after install, even though it doesn't specify restart is required. How do I get my system to recognize this update? I am running XP Professional.

Search your computer for a file called "Lrun32.exe" and rename it to Lrun32.old.

This issue can occur if you had some sort of MS "Step-by-step interactive training" software installed, but then removed it, leaving the above file behind. Once you rename the file and reboot, hopefully windows update will realize you don't need the update. Rename c:\windows\softwaredistribution if the first step does not work.

Best of luck, hope this helps!

I did a system search and don't have Lrun32.exe anywhere. You said to rename c:\windows\softwaredistribution but it was not allowed. Any other suggestions? I don't believe I ever had any step by step interactive training on this system so I can't understand where this all started. I did a search on the MS Updates site but (SURPRISE) no help on this.

Doublecheck add-remove programs for step by step interactive training, it was packaged with some older versions of Office, I believe.

If you check the MS article about this update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923723/en-us) it mentions the exact problem you are experiancing, under "Known issue with this security update", and my advice was based on that.

Renaming the software distribution folder and c:\windows\system32\catroot2 (NOT catroot, only catroot2) would be a good idea if you do not have the step-by-step training installed or the Lrun32.exe file. If you get "access denied" or "folder in use" or somesuch when you try to rename those files, reboot, tap F8, and go into safemode, you should be able to rename them in that mode.

If all else fails, just go to the msupdate website, chose a "custom" installation, uncheck the kb923723 update, and then hide it (I think the exact wording is along the lines of "show this update in the future").

    Best of luck!

Thanks. I did all the renaming in Safe mode but still had the problem so I went to the MS Updates site and unchecked the update as you suggested and selected the option not to show it again. Based on the other thread, that should do the trick. Again, thanks.
