I'm required to install Microsoft Virtual Machine in order to run a graphics program. Apparently, it can't be uninstalled after installation. Has anyone ever used Microsoft Virtual Machine before? Is there anything to be worried about?

    Hi

Yes as it was build into many versions of Windows until the issue between SUN and Microsoft over JAVA had the end effect that Microsofts licence to the JAVA code finished in 2003, with an end point of 31st Dec 2007 for security updates to JVM only.

Check to see if you have it already: Click Start > Run and in the run box type cmd and hit enter, then in the cmd prompt type jview and hit enter, this will tell you if MSJVM is installed and what version as latest known is 3810

You can uninstall it by using the removal tool http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4158.html
there are manual instructions for removing MSJVM but the tool above does same

Thanks Halo, apparently it wasn't included in my copy of XP Professional which was installed in 2004. I also checked out the removal tool which is made available thanks to Major Geeks!

Do you have MSJVM files already?

They came in the main installer version 3805/9, here is 3805 http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/msjavx86.exe

Then you'd need to install last known security update in 3810 and still on the MS update server pool http://www.download.windowsupdate.c...l/MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

I know there are some applications that need a specific programming language or version to run, but have you tried Sun's Java to see if it runs that app ok? as Sun's Java is more secure and still having updates.

Halo, I doesn't look like I have MSJVM. At least I couldn't find it through either "Run" or "Search". I do, however, have Sun's Java. I won't be running the graphics program for at least a day or two so I don't yet know if Sun's Java can be substituted or if I specifically need MSJVM. Thanks for the links to the most recent version of MSJVM and the security update. If possible I'll leave another reply when I know more.

Halo, I've been unable to successfully download the CAD freeware from Albre. It's an extremely long download made even worse by using dial-up. After three or four failed attempts I'm about ready to call it quits. I'm beginning to realize that one of the few, if only, places where one can obtain consistently reliable downloads is at Major Geeks. Unfortunately, they don't list this particular software.

In short, without the Albre software I won't need MSJVM.
