I wonder if that will fix the problem many people on Facebook have had, and in turn it steals their password, and puts a post that they have a video to share, and others click on it and on and on and on...

    JORDAN ROBERTSON
    Published: Today

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Microsoft Corp. has taken the rare step of warning about a serious computer security vulnerability it hasn't fixed yet.

The vulnerability disclosed Monday affects Internet Explorer users whose computers run the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating software.

It can allow hackers to remotely take control of victims' machines. The victims don't need to do anything to get infected except visit a Web site that's been hacked.

Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability. People are drawn to these sites by clicking a link in spam e-mail.

The so-called "zero day" vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part of its software used to play video. The problem arises from the way the software interacts with Internet Explorer, which opens a hole for hackers to tunnel into.

Microsoft urged vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of its software, which can be done from Microsoft's Web site, while the company works on a "patch" - or software fix - for the problem.

Microsoft rarely departs from its practice of issuing security updates the second Tuesday of each month. When the Redmond, Wash.-based company does issue security reminders at other times, it's because the vulnerabilities are very serious.

A recent example was the emergency patch Microsoft issued in October for a vulnerability that criminals exploited to infect millions of PCs with the Conficker worm. While initially feared as an all-powerful doomsday device, that network of infected machines was eventually used for mundane moneymaking schemes like sending spam and pushing fake antivirus software.

Thanks Bill - maybe a DNS error - but I'm a good boy, never open spam ;)

This is why I personally disable ActiveX on my comp. The only site one needs ActiveX for is MicroSoft for the automatic updates. I just use Belarc about a week after "Patch Tuesday" and manually update that way. Never had a problem with this route.

    History repeats itself.
Remember when the Windows 98 "vulnerabilities" were listed?
Could Microsoft be coercing us to update our OS again?

Follow the instructions given to you by DomLuc. Yes, it IS that simple, and quick, very easy, unbelievably EASY... But, important..... You too Earthling can do this.... Just follow the instructions, and you too will be safe....;)

Read his post again, : Here is what I did: click onto the link. Click FIX ME. A small file downloads, and then click OPEN. A box opens and just follow the prompts.... Agree to the terms, of course, and let it do it's thing... Then, when it is done, it will have the "close" button, and just click it and you are done.... VERY SIMPLE ....... GO FOR IT! I lived thru it, and so will you ;)

OK, Eathling, what OS are you using? The only one I know of that this doesn't affect, is Vista... If you are using vista, then no worries for you :)

  15. Earthling

Vista SP2 as workhorse, Win 7 RC for fun/interest.

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Now, that explains it... "Vista"... you don't need the FIX-IT-FOR-ME... ;)
You just get to watch the rest of us get "FIXED"! :p

Greetings, OK, did you follow the prompts? It is so simple, I even did a double take! If you followed the prompts, and clicked Yes, you agree to the terms of service, and the box did it's thing, like you seen a green bar going across, and saying that the file was being downloaded, then you clicked finish, honey, you are protected, and you don't have to worry...

Don't be :confused, be happy ;)

HEY, you are not thick, my friend, we all had to learn the same way. Ask questions, and you will get answers... Glad to be of help..... Let me know how this goes, OK? ;)

    TeeCee MajorGeek

OK, yoou clicked the accept the terms, did you also click "CLOSE" when it finiished? It just may have been so quick, and my bar was blue. It is just a loading bar, showing you it has loaded... If you seen the "CLOSE" button, then you are all set. ;)

The install was good, all was fine on that end.Microsoft sent up a window saying it had to close because it had encountered a problem.I checked on it and it was the fix me.Does vista work much better than xp?I have heard of some people who were not happy with it and took it off.:confused

Hello, what browser are you using now? You can go to search, and search for FILES and then type in 50287. that will show you where it is, and THAT is the FIX-IT-FOR-ME file.... If I were you, I would search for that, then double click onto it, and just follow the prompts, that way you are assured of it being installed. Here is my "CLOSE" button, after it installed on my IE7 SP3: View attachment 117475

this is a ZIP file, so you will have to click it to open it... I hope you got to this step before IE closed... I personally do not care for Vista, but that is just me...

Hello, just my personal preference, as my neighbor has it, and has had a few problems with it, and I am so used to XP, it seems that with Vista everything is the opposite... Like I said, that is my personal experience with it...

I don't know anything about windows messenger, as I don't use it. I am sure someone will be along that is more familiar with that part. I haven't seen any difference in my 'puter myself, but usually don't with updates or fixes anyway. When you have the time tomorrow, it is a very quick install. I do mean very quick.... Yes, working in the yard will tucker you out! OK, see you tomorrow... ;)

Hi, I don't use messenger myself, but did you check the screen shots? Did you get those when you did the "fix-it-for-me"? Just curious... ;)
