When computer was restored to earlier date the programs will not run program keeps asking for and association to run applications. controll panel applications show cannot find rundll32.exe. any sugestions?

 

try a system file check(sfc /scanow)
but you'll need the Xp OS disc when prompted,and you may have to click the retry button occasionally during the check until its been completed

sfc /scannow will work to replace the file if rundll32.exe is actually missing. I had a virus a few years ago that gave me the rundll.exe error but it was worded rather strangely. I mention it because a file association fix might be enough to get exe(s) running and there may not be a problem with rundll32.exe at all and it is just a matter of poor wording in the error.

Try going here and downloading the exe fix. Unzip the file and go inside the folder. Right-click the xp_exe_fix.reg file and select Merge. You will be prompted to continue and allow the merge so agree.

Test a program/exe file to see if it runs and then try a Control Panel application and see if it works.
