I use Win 98, MS Word 2000. I made the mistake of playing around with background colors and went with blue. I now want to permanently go back to my white background. I select Format/Background/No Fill or try Format/Background/White and it either whacks out my written content, or goes back to blue when I reselect my preferred view of print view. Any suggestions appreciated.

Go to Tools/Options/General Tab and remove the check on "Blue background, white text". Click on OK and tell us what happens.
