Microsoft XP Registry CD Key recovery

I, like many others, have been hit with the 'unique' requirements for reading the Microsoft Registry.

I recently had to accomplish a System Restore on an HP Media System due to a corruption of the MS XP OS. This restore reset the system back to the original factory settings.

After restoring the system I could not locate the original CD Keys for the MS Office. I do have copies of the exported *.reg files. I am looking for a way to view one of these exported files to recover the lost CD Key.

I am afraid to try to restore one of these reg files, because I don't want to end up looking at a corrupted system again. I have tried a program called 'prodkey' which will list the Product ID and Product Key. However, I have been unsuccessful in trying to get that same information from these unmounted exported reg files.

Are there any other ways to view this information in my exported reg files? :yum

    Thanks

    Hi

What you can do instead of importing or merging the registry Hives you have saved is to Load the Hive, then you can check it out and then Unload it.

Only works iirc in HKEY_Local_Machine and HKEY_Users, open regedit and highlight one of the HIVE's above and then click File > Load Hive and then give it any name you want when prompted TEST will do as it stands out, you will thn see a TEST Hive folder which you can edit and check for any keys, then once finished just click File > Unload Hive.

You could try ProduKey from Nirsoft and load your external saved .reg file into it and see if it finds a Serial Key for Office, to do this download the app from HERE and unzip, its a stand alone app so no installing needed, then click File > Select Source > choose Load the Product keys file from an external registry hive and browse for your saved .reg file, then click OK and see if it finds your Serial key from the PID.

Try the above they may or may not work, been a while since I needed to import offine a .reg file, and generally done with a .dat of the master files and not an export to .reg.

Only otehr thing is to contact Microsoft support and if you have the CD of Office they maybe able to activate it for you, longshot but has worked for some in the past.

Thanks. Unfortunately, regedit will not load the hive and Produkey says the exported reg files are an invalid format.

Too bad I can't find it with SuperEdit. It loads the reg files. But, I am unable to find the CD keys. :(

There is no CD for the Office. It was one of those 60-day trials loaded by HP.
