middle mouse button damn and blast!!!

hey people....just havin a play with 2009...my mmb doesn't let me pan the dolly...I press it and the scene vanishes till i press it again... I'm using a dell mouse/pc... I've looked at the mouse settings in the control panel but there is nothing that I can alter to fix it...It just gives me the option of how many times I can notch to scroll....has anyone any ideas on howto fix this?? Has anyone had the same or similar issues?? thanks...

Oh...and how can I check to make sure the drivers middle mouse button is set to a compatible default scroll wheel mode?? I don't know...someone suggested this on another forum?? does this make sense??
