Migrate Problem

I am trying to clone my 1T hdd to a 250G SSD, when I go star the clone, using Acronis, both disks show up as primary disks and will obviously not clone. I have Win 8.1 12G Ram, Lost tried Google and got nowhere any help appreciated.

 

You are trying to fit a quart into a pint pot. To clone a drive the receiving drive has to be the same size or larger than the donor drive. Use Acronis to image the drive to a third drive and then restore the image to the SSD. As long as the data being transferred is less than 250GB it will work.

There is plenty of space on the SSD I have done it with these same drives, just reset to factory and am re-installing. The problem is not with space, just that both are listed as primary drives.

 

You are right about space. Cloning used to require similarly sized or larger disks but reading the Acronis help it's a bit cleverer these days and can clone to a smaller disk. However Acronis themselves, in Help, recommend the backup and restore method I suggested. All OS disks have to be primary, that's a red herring.

 

Thanks for the reply. Here is what is happening as I look further. When I started the clone I used theHDD as source and the SSD as target, the final step in the process shows the SSD as both source and target??

 

Real risk of cloning in the wrong direction and wiping your HDD. There have been numerous instances of this happening - terminate the process.
