I have an old computer with XP and just got a new computer with Windows 7 and thought I would "migrate" all of my settings over. Didn't know that I should download the "tool" on my old system first. Now I have a USMT file that does nothing on the new computer. Is there any way to extract the files or do I have to start all over?

    Hi

I tend not to go down that route of User State Migration, prefer the Easy Transfer Wizard route and thats built into Win7 also.

But this may help you with Windows 7 and USMT http://edge.technet.com/Media/User-State-Migration-with-Windows-7/

If you still have old PC then try the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard with your XP and then once you have the backup file of various user accounts, files etc then just type Easy Transfer in the Start Search box in Win7 and locate and recover your settings, just then need to install your apps again, did this on a PC yesterday and took no longer than 1hr to get Win 7 installed, recover user settings with WET and install most of the main apps.
