The current issue of Computer Active shows a mini PC, and inside does a big write up on them.
What do people think of these ?
I've not heard of them, until now, but would they make good replacement for say, a raspberry Pi or similar HIfi streamer device, easier to set up etc etc ?

You talking about systems like the Intel NUC? What you pay for what you get in the respect that you're not going to be able to upgrade the hardware, usually these are one board with everything soldered on. If they are running Windows you need storage space to meet the requirements of the next update / upgrade. I remember those super cheap laptops that you could not update because they didn't meet the storage requirements.
I bought a Lenovo "stick pc" thinking it would work for viewing videos on my TV, not very good at all.

Easier to setup? In most cases you're more likely to find a How-To for a Pi than Windows. More people use Pi's for niche projects than use a full blown Windows system, but that really depends on the project.

I'm in the US so don't read Computer Active.
    I looked here https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-windows-mini-pcs
noted the prices and thought - that's too much money to spend.

I own what I consider a mini pc. It is an Asus 7" eeepc purchased in January 2008. It has a 4GB hd and runs linux. Of course the hard drive is too small to install a newer version of linux so if I wanted to browse on it, I'd have to use linux on a USB stick. It was nice to travel with. I took it on cruises and used it to check email and listen to music or watch movies on sd cards I inserted in the card slot.
It served its purpose at the time but I own better options now, especially for traveling. My 10" android tablet has a larger screen and because it has better hardware, works way better than a 2008 era netbook". If I want to travel really light, all I need is a smartphone.

If the computer is to stay stationary, I see no need for a mini computer. I also don't like A-I-O systems because things go wrong and like a laptop, aren't easily fixed.
