im building my self a new system i spent about 2months choosing what parts lol and as its going in my bedroom and will probably be left on 24/7 i want as little noise as possible. The CPU is a Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz Prescott which comes with a fan and i normally build systems with Intel Celeron 2.66GHz with fans and they seem to be quiet so thats not really gonna be the problem but i there any way that i can reduce chassis and PSU fan noise as i dont wanna pay loads for these if there is a cheapier option lol :D

if it'll fit just buy 1 or 2 120mm fans, they're relatively quiet, dont make any more noise than an 80mm fan... make sure the airflow goes all the way through the computer though, one in, one out ;p

its typically better to but the intake air at the bottom of the computer and the outlet at the top because heat rises and all, but most computers arent able to have a fan at the bottom or top. Anyway that's more info than you asked for but oh well ;)

ill have to check the spec of the case im gonna get but i dont think it can take 120mm just the 80mm but ill look into it thank's

2 months of research and you didn't stumble accross the fact a64's are better cpu's? :D Only joking its personal choice really but you really have picked the wrong proccessor for a quiet pc the prescotts run Hot,so hot, that exa turbo's hot prescott thread in cooling and modding has been viewed nearly two and half thousand times by worried hot presscott owners,to keep your pc cool and quiet it might be a good idea to invest in a thermaright xp-120,other than that your stuck with the noisy stock heatsink.

so if u had £800-1000 to spend on a system what would you spend it on? as i said i spent ages choosing the components as everytime i decided what i was going to get id get a load of special offers com through lol now ive been waiting another month to order the parts so im going to have to start again any way lol :D

I would recommend you do what Rikky said, go with a AMD64. I have a prescott 3.0ghz, and my computer is noisy as hell just trying to keep it below 50C idel. It always goes over 70C with load! I've got a Coolermaster case, good airflow and a Thermalright XP-120 with Arctic Silver 5 themal paste. AMD from what i've seen run alot cooler, more like a Northbridge. I think a decent case is one of the most important componants of a pc, and graphics card if you like games. enough ram is also important, most computers you buy from the shops come with 1GB standard so that much or more if you can. Don't forget a decent PSU, passive if you want to keep the noise down. I'd go for a Tagen, Antec or Zalman over 400W. If you do go with AMD the newest socket is 939 (thanks for the info Rikky!) so thats the best bet for upgradeability.

Myth, what will you be using the PC for? 800-1000 is about 1500-1700 USD, right? --ball park, anyway. You can get one hella PC for around $1200 which still leaves some extra cash for quieting your case. Check out www.endpcnoise.com they'll head you in the right direction for quiet parts. I would look around for the same products they mention at lower prices though. I've been working to quiet my shuttle XPC for a while now. I can sleep with it on now. Still have a long way to go though.

Oh, a direct answer to your question: To minimize fan noise, get quality fans. Papst are supposedly the quietest. Though 16 bucks per fan is a bit too rich for my blood.

To answer your question myth, mine "sig",But now you want a slightly fastercpu

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=119283

    A pci-e nforce 4 mobo,

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=176394

    a pci-e 6800gt or ultra

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=178497

A gig of cas 2 matched memory, the new audigy, with a case and psu will come to around £800-£900 if you need a monitor, you could get a slower cpu,a cheaper nf4 board the dfi's are good but arn't at scan and you could throw a monitor in aswell.

well basically im after a gaming machine really but i dont really know what im going for i really only build office type pcs so preformance is never top of the list lol and but i know a little about it but still looking for the best i can get for my money lol so in the £1000 i gotta get a full pc monitor included now mother board and graphics card are my biggest problem as with the office pcs its normally just an asus board with onboard everything so no need to worry but i want good graphics and there is just to much choice lol i saw this http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=85287 (sorry if that link not allowed) over the weekend and wondered if any one knew if it was any good if what you lot think about it as you probably got a better idea than me  or if you know of better boards!!

and anyone know of any really good/differnt cases??? :D

Back on the topic of quiet computers, Vantec Stealth fans are very quiet. I've got 7 of them running in my case right now and the only thing I can hear is my noisy Thermaltake HSF.

If you're building a system from scratch, why not consider watercooling? It's definitely quieter, and most of them use 120mm radiator fans which are quiet as they don't need to spin very fast to pump serious air.

As for a case that has fantastic ventilation, I'm using a Thermaltake Armour case - the case comes with 1 x 120mm front intake fan, 1 x 120mm rear exhaust fan, 1 x 90mm rear exhaust fan and 1 x 90mm ceiling exhaust fan. Of all these fans, the only fan noise I can hear is from my PSU!

was all bought off www.ebuyer.co.uk anyone can use it if u want ill pm u all the quick find codes i had to cut back on extra ram and the 200GB HDD and the case i wanted cuz i crashed my car  so needed money for repairs lol but ill be upgrading as soon as i can ;)

if u want a good board and graphics card then go for the bundle i got its worth it just for the extras you get :p its got 2 free games, cd/dvd burning software and also got 8 channel onboard sound which is not mentioned anywhere and i was gonna get a sound card which was also missed out to get the price down so i only got shitty speakers aswell but its good enough to annoy the old man and lady aswell as next door :D :D the system cost me £942.55 in total and for this sort of system not only where would you find it, its not like they got them in "PC-World" :p but think how much it would cost if they did

I get my parts from Scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk,its just for a price comparison really I'll check them out ;) I dont need a a new system yet check my sig.11180 3dmark 2003 ;) and will be even higher once I have finished rebuilding it.

As for noise I thought the stock a64 fan was too load when it wound up,I did have poor airflow though mainley I believe because of the design of my msi neo platinum 2 motherboard,I have just upgraded to thermalright xp-90c heatsink so I should be able to overclock it but keep the noise level low.

When the stock heatsink winds up to full rpm it just over 45 decibels, but its a high pitch annoying whine, not the low turbulant like noise a 120mm fan makes,if you have good airflow it will automatically stay low, which case did you go for and how many fans you got cooling everything?

You can mode +12V down for your fan by using -5v and +12v your fan will run at slow speed so it nerver make noise anymore. :)

thats the case i got it look great there no extra fans in there yet as i said i had to cut back so just got the main parts so i can upgrade later when i got the money i gonna get another 512MB ram the 200GB HDD and cooling might even look into this new liquid metal cooling if its out when i got the cash if it not that expencive lol and some better speakers as i only got 2:1 at the min but it all does me for now as you all know 13863 benchmark i dont really need to upgrade for a couple of years

The case doesnt look like it has much cooling, might be a good idea to run sandra or speedfan while running 3d mark 2003 make sure your vid card and cpu are around 50 ish,BTW what are your temps now?

  20. Myth

    Myth Private E-2

the case aint to bad it has got grills along each side but you cant see them in the pics, i havnt got a clue what the temps are its not hooked up to the net cuz i not got the net sorted at home yet that has had to go on hold for the car :( hopefully in a week or to ill have it then ill download the latest benchmarks and all the other stuff but im not using it that much as i house sitting for some one looking after the dog etc  came at the wrong time i mite download some stuff and burn it on disk so i can check it out, what and where? i never built a system that ive had to worry about heat before lol

  21. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

just go into display properties, advanced until you get to your vid card,it should have the temp of it in there or download sandra from the download section here at MG,open the enviroment monitor, this will show all your temps its the first thing I do whenever I build a system :)

  22. Myth

    Myth Private E-2

ill sort that out l8r if i can, i only ever build office spec pc's or low spec home systems so heat is never a problem but as this is mine and i know its running hot i am a little worried lol and my boss jelious cuz his system only hitting 7000ish on the benchmarks lol
