What specs does a comp need to run xp pro decently? I'm trying to get my girlfriend's laptop running a little less like crap, but:

    1) it's a compaq that is a few years old

    and

    2) it's running win ME

    =(

When XP first came out, there was a disk they sent out that you could run on a machine and it would tell you what hardware and software were likely to be problematic or inoperative. Maybe there is still something like it on the MS website. Actually, I believe it is also somewhere on the XP install disk itself. Compatibility Wizard or somesuch?

Obviously you need more RAM for best results. As long as you don't have to dismantle the laptop to fit more RAM then that is the way to go. On my laptop there is a little panel that you unscrew to give access to fit more RAM. Mine has 32mb fitted to the motherboard as standard. I first fitted 2 x 64mb sticks to give 160mb and then replaced them with 2 x 128mb to give a maximum of 288mb. That is the maximum that can be fitted according to the manual. Check out the manual or ask the maker what is the maximum that you can fit. Depends on how many slots are available and the makers recommendation as to how far you can go. My laptop has W98SE, but the same principles apply. Baz
