misbehaving mice ;-)

Hope this is a simple one.

Recently, the 'movement' of my optical mouse has been erratic and a bit slow in its response, so I bought a new one (have to admit, it's only a cheap one), but I have the same problem.

I've adjusted the movement in control panel/mouse to fast, but the movement is still erratic (a bit like one of the old 'ball' mice) and I don't know what else could cause this.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Keep a can of compressed dusting gas handy to blast out hair, dust, and cookie crumbs from the optic lens area. Also, try a different surface - some reflect better than others. And make sure you have plenty of free disk space.

If still having problems, we need more information about the hardware and OS.

    Hi there. Thanks for answering.

OK - mice are clean as they should be. So, my system....

I'm running a Compaq pc, with 3.00 gb RAM with an Intel Core duo CPU, OS is Windows Vista - with SP1.

    Does that help you?

Please let me know if there is anything else you need to know, although I might need a hand in finding the information for you (not too technically minded you know) ;-)

    Still wondering about disk space.

    Have you scanned for malware?

I find my optical mousy works best on a dark surface, it get confused by its own reflection bouncing back on a light coloured surface. I also found since changing to IE8 sometimes my mouse behaves oddly when I click on the side bar of favourites. Very odd.

Thanks again. Scanned regularly, nothing extraordinary found, just the usual cookies, I run SuperAntiSpyware (replaced Spybot a short while ago).

Can you tell me how I find out about disk space please?

Just open My Computer and highlight a drive it will tell you what space is used as well as free space (For Windows XP)

ok, my C: drive is showing 207gb free of 290gb. Does that help at all?

Well, it eliminates disk space as the problem. Did you try different surfaces?

Mice track better on porous surfaces like cloth or paper, but any surface that's not entirely flat will do.

I had this bad mouse a while back, and it would track properly on my pants, but it would track quite badly on pretty much every thing else...

thank you for all your advice. not sure if it was just a 'blip' but mice seem to be behaving at the moment - if there's a further problem, i'll be sure to ask you lovely people for more advice.

    Thanks again. :wave
