I have multiple issues that began occurring at around the time that I installed
Hotfix for XP KB954550-v5, which was necessary by Microsoft Update. Here are the
    annoying problems:

    1. The volume control tray icon disappears every time reboot computer........must
    "enable" it every reboot.
    2. Hewlett Packard Deskjet 932c tray icon disappears every reboot, and must be enabled
    same as volume icon.
    3. On shutdown get message that "Spyware Doctor" program is not ending in time for
    shutdown.............this happens EVERY shutdown.
    4. On shutdown get message that ".Net Broadcast" program is not ending in time for
shutdown................this happens about 50% of the time.

    Thanks for your help.

  2. Hi Joe,

Well, first thing I see wrong is the fact that you have Spyware Doctor. I've tried it and didn't like it at all, I was suspicious about the fact that it would find all these random dangerous programs on my computer when others like Ad-Aware, Spybot, A-Squared, Avast, AVG, McAfee, Spyware Blaster (To name a few) supposedly missed. That's just my opinion, but the fact that they charge didn't help there cause. :booger

My first move would be to ditch SD, that in itself could help with your other problems. Rest assured, we will definitly help in any way we can. :cool

Some more info about your system would help greatly. How long has this been going on?

    since 2/4/2009.............

  4. Did you attempt a system restore once you noticed this event happening? It will most likely get rid of your update, but at least it will confirm or eliminate the Windows update as the culprit. I think it's worth a shot.

Hotfix "cannot be removed" using control panel/add, delete programs.
I ran a regedit cleanup program, and the 2 programs that did not end on time, now do end on time, and shutdown is now fast as it always was.

I am still left with the annoyance of having to renew BOTH tray icons (Hewlett Packard printer, and windows volume control). I can do this by simply logging off and then logging back on again. Shouldn't the computer log me off, and then back on every time I shut down and then reboot? Why must I log off/on every time I reboot, in order to renew those two tray icons?

    You didn't answer this question
asked by "Can't come up with any".
Did you try going back to 2/3/09?

Yes, I did, and it caused my ATI catalyst driver to fail to enable the "control center" tray icon, as well as preventing its operation if I tried to open it from within the start menu.
    I reversed the "restore".

The problem is probably with my user profile, because if I log off/on, the 2 missing icons appear in the tray, and they function fully.
Where in the registry can I find user profile?
