Missing CD/DVDrom drive

My CD/DVDrom was originally listed as drive e:\. I was having intermittent problems with it for a while then it went away. About that same time I used one of the usb slots and it started coming up as drive e:. If the usb wasn't in use the CD/DVDrom was drive e:. I noticed that when I tried to use the CD/DVDrom I would get an "installing hardware" notification. It worked as long as the hardware was installed first.

I just reinstalled my printer and plugged the usb cable into one of the slots and it now comes up as a "removable disk e:".

Is there possibly a conflict between the CD/DVDrom wanting drive e:?

My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6700 (dv6809wm) running Windows Vista Home Premium. I have already tried all the fixits possible - I posted under software. Since absolutely nothing worked I thought I'd try this thread.

My cd/dvdrom does not show up anywhere - device manager, explorer, bios, etc...etc...

I've been reading about removing IDE controllers from device manager. I'm not familiar with that "stuff". I am really at a loss as to what I need to do next.

    Thanks in advance.

Not good. First open up the computer and replace the cable. Also besure the power plug is in securely. If it still doesn't show up anywhere. eother replace it with another internal device or get a USB external and burn with that.

Thank you, sorry the computer is a HP Pavilion dv6700 laptop. No cables, or plugs.

I think I've finally convinced myself I need a new cd/dvd drive. I have never used it to burn cds, but I do use it ocassionally to upload programs.

Any suggestions on a good external cd/dvd drive?

oops, sorry I didn't read carefully to see it was a laptop.
Sorry, I'm not one to offer a suggestion on a good external burner. I use an internal CD burner in a case as an external connected by USB and I have a CD/DVD (player not a burner) in another external case that I also connect via USB.

Look at prices at a place like NewEgg then read the reviews and also google the model. That's what I do when I'm thinking about buying hardware.

Here are the external CD/DVD burners at NewEgg
