missing/corrupt file on startup...

Well, I get this message everytime I try to start up my computer...

"The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

Type the name of the Windows loader
(e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD)"


This started happening ever since I tried updating the drivers for my graphics card. And all my computer does is stay idle on this error screen and doesn't load or anything. Please help! I really have no idea how to fix this? Oh yeah, I'm running Windows Me () and I cannot even boot up in safe mode. Thx all!

 

Well, it looks like you have a corrupted virtual device driver. This is not an easy repair, but can be done. Here's something to read through before you attempt it:

It boils down to viewing a list of all files within the VMM32.vxd file, which you get from the registry. You then rename the existing file to something like 'VMM32.sav'. Then, you extract & recreate the VMM23.vxd file from the Windows CAB files.

Or, you can follow Microsoft's advice, and reinstall Windows.

 

i might as well go ahead and reinstall Me Windows but my only question is....lol...HOW!? I put the Me installation disc in the drive but once I turn on the computer it goes directly to that error page and does not load at all? thx for your help.

 

You need to go into your BIOS and set the computer to boot from the CD drive, instead of the hard drive.
