Hi, guys. I'm kind of a novice when it comes to this stuff so I beg for your patience.

I got a virus yesterday (at least it took effect yesterday) where IE and Firefox closed suddenly and a series of dialog boxes appeared. I don't remember exactly what they said, but I think it was something about a scan of the drive sector with options for continue, try again and cancel. Probably 30 of the same boxes. Immediately, program files and shortcuts to them disappeared from my desktop. I restarted the computer and then everything (files and documents) were also gone. I ran AVG and Malawarebytes scans and it found several harmful files and quarantined/deleted them. I think the computer is OK now, but the desktop files are gone and I don't know where to find them. Several, if not all, of the programs are still in the "program files" folder, but I can't get the regular files and docs I had.

When I check the remaining space on my C drive, it would suggest those files I had on the desktop are still on it and I just can't access them. Is there anything I can do?

    Thanks.

You're welcome. Do you have any other malware related issues?

None that I know of. The only thing out of the norm that I've noticed since the incident is my taskbar looks a little different. Hard to describe, but the quick-start bar isn't there and the minimized windows look different. Not like the default Windows 7 settings I had it on. But I assumed I could just reset that stuff in Control Panel.

Do you think there's anything to that, or is there anything else I should look out for?

    Yes :)
Doesn't sound like a malware problem to me but you may want to run through this guide just in case: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide
