    Hi,
I have previously posted in Remove Malware and been advised by Chaslang to post here.
Originally downloaded free music causing all sort of problems could only boot up in safe mode, after running the Malware removal can now load normally.
However, seem to be left with missing files problem.
    Running Win 2000 professional SP4.
    Error messages
msiexe Ordinall Not Found, The ordinal 240 could not be located in the dynamic link library msi dll.

    Adobe Arm.exe Ordinal Not Found

Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE dll could not be located.

I thought to insert the win 2000 disk and repair but could not get it to start.
(is there another way to start it)

Desperate to get this pc sorted for brother help appreciated.
    Thanks :confused

Not sure about W2000, but is there a setup in your BIOS to boot first from your floppy drive? (It would seem you don't have a CD drive, or am I mistaken?)

If yes, then choose this setting, insert the OS disk, and reboot. Not sure if it will give you a repair option, you may have to reformat and reinstall. If so, all of your personal data will be lost, so save that first.

If you don't know how to access BIOS, google for it with your make/model of your machine, or post back here.

    Hi,
I thought I would run sfc /scannow and put my disk in, everything went through to the end but there are still files missing.
Could I just ask you, how I format the drive? and would it simply be a case of re-installing (putting in the CD), would I need to get drivers etc (I think there is a disk for some of these)

The other thought is I have a Win XP disk available, could this be used??

Sorry to throw so much at you but my mind is in overdrive.

At this point in time, I would not try a clean install of Win 2K. Microsoft ended support in July 2010 so I'm not even sure you'd be able to patch it.
You can only install XP on one computer. If the disk you have is installed elsewhere, one of the computers will be marked as pirated. Another thought, if the computer is running Windows 2K, it is fairly old. Is XP supported on it? (maybe hardware drivers would be missing).

    Adobe ARM is not needed
    http://www.ehow.com/facts_7555633_adobe-arm.html

    Install startup Control Panel http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html
and disable Adobe updater from running at startup; that eliminates that error.

I have the msiexe.exe file in my C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache at a size of 77kb
    version is: 3.1.4000.1823
I've zipped it and uploaded it. You can paste this into your browser and download it and put in the location I've mentioned above and aslo in
    C:\WINNT\system32
It is in 6 locations but a few are the previous version 2 something.
    Code:
    http://file.walagata.com/w/perk/Assorted/msiexec.zip
So many msoe and msoe2 dlls that I wouldn't know where to begin. I've never used Outlook Express so I'm useless on helping with that.
One of the msoe dll is located in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express

    Many thanks,
I think I was just panicking and my head was all over, I have been reading the installation book and having a good think. You are right about the xp I may be causing more trouble.

I will work through your suggestions and download the files over the week-end and take it slowly (no Panic)
Just to clarify, when I have downloaded the files (I will put them onto USB Drive) where and how do I put them into pc?

I am going to see if I can get into the BIOS as Brandypeppy suggests (I have googled some info on this) and do a repair with the CD and see if this sorts out the problem if not I will try the downloaded files and let you know how I get on.

I would like to thank you both for taking the time to post an answer, I

From your USB stick: the Startup Control Panel is a zipped exe file. If the 2K doesn't have an unzipper, unzip it then just move the exe to the 2K desktop and run it.

The msiexe.exe should be copied to two spots on the 2K computer:
    C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache
    C:\WINNT\system32

    Hi,,Well !
had problems with files so decided to wipe pc and re-install with the windows CD (I know nightmare)
After lots of trouble finally wiped the system clean and installed, my problem now is!!!!!

I have put in the resources CD for the drivers, but cannot understand just what needs to be downloaded, I am trying to set up the internet so that I can update the system.(I dont seem to be getting the driver for this, will it be on the CD)

Also I appear to still be running in safe mode (it does not say this) but all the icons seem very large.I restarted the pc and pressed F2 entered set-up and changed it to start in normal mode (is this correct?)

I completely understand if you have lost interest, :crybut I would be soooo
    grateful for your continued help
    Many thanks

Sounds like you need chipset drivers. The video chip is probably soldered on the motherboard. If a computer does not have the driver, it reverts to VGA mode.

I had an unknown computer (I salvaged from someone's junk heap) that I installed 2K on.
I found out the motherboard was intel. I went to intel's site, put the # in and downloaded all the drivers. Then I had decent video and sound.

    Grab Everest: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
don't let the oldness bother you, because the computer you are working with is old. Run it and it should identify the hardware. If that doesn't work, I'll do some searching and find my notes to see what I used to identify the motherboard.

I have been on the web site for dell and found the drivers but I cannot download them, unless the machine is registered or transfered by the company you cannot download without a fee!! (bummer)

    Any thoughts??

    Sorry back again,

Just been looking at the Dell website and found that if the drivers are not loaded in the correct order the network drivers will not install, so I will re-format the pc and make sure that the drivers are correctly installed.
I will get back to you and let you know how I get on.

Did not want you to spend unnecessary time looking for drivers.

    Thanks.

If you have problems, please state Dell model:Dimension/Optiplex/Inspiron and letters/numbers after one of the three names.

We have an ice storm today and as long as the electricity stays on, I'm planted in front of the computer because it isn't safe to go past the front door.

    Hi
Re-read all the blurb from Dell who say that the drivers had to be put on pc in a set sequence, so re-formatted the pc again!!, put the drivers on in the correct order, but still have the 2 yellow exclamation marks at the side of
    Ethernet controller
    Universal serial (USB) controller.

I think I am just missing something but dont know what?
When I look in My Network Places there is nothing there, no LAN icon, nothing

The pc connected before the problem to the internet, now I cannot find the Modem .
Think I am going nut's (hope your weather improves)

Dell PC model no DHS A 2.0/1.0A
    System Info= Win 2000 5.00 2195 service pk 2
    intell (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.00GH
    AT/AT Commpatable

    Back again!!

Right I have got the driver for the universal serial (USB) controller sorted, the driver was there on pc but I had to go into device manager and right click on the USB ? for properties then re-install driver . I navigated to the driver folder and that was it.

    Now I have the driver
3Com 3C 905c-TXM ethernet Adapter REV-AO1-00 but when I navigate to this driver I get a warning message that windows does not recommend I download this driver. I am worried about carrying on.

By the way PC info OPTIPEX GX260 (Bet your sick of this!!!)

    But thanks anyway.

    Nah, I enjoy a challenge.

I'm looking at Dell's page for Network drivers on your model Optiplex running 2K and there are 21 different ones.
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...bIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False

This is the old driver (5/21/2002)
    3Com 3C905C-TXM Ethernet Adaptor , v. WinDriver(5.43(4.24), A00
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&osl=en&vercnt=2&os=WNT5&checkFormat=false

and the one you have is a newer one.

I'd probably grab both of them. Start by installing the A00 first. If it works, don't update because it does say that the 11/20/2002 is an optional update.

The last option you would have, provided you can get an internet connection working is to go to the link I posted first and click on the blue link Enter a Service Tag. You get a popup window and Dell will scan the computer. That way, you might know if you have all the proper drivers.

    Hi

The Dell website will not let me download the driver to my win xp pc (not Dell), after online chat they say I would have to pay for this, this is very strange!!.

The other point is I would have thought that the driver on the disk would be ok as it is from the resource CD provide by Dell, what do you think?

I am going to take another look at the the resource disk and see if the older version is on it

Will get back to you :confused

    Update on progress!!

Found the driver you mention on the disk, install it, go into device manager still yellow ? on ethernet so right clicked this and search for driver.
    Following error message

    "Locate file"
"C;\\dell\\drivers\R4995\usb2:info file could not be found please verify the correct file name was given"

Am I downloading this driver to the wrong place? Am I going crazy(yes)

I think I am just missing some step but cannot think what it is any idea's or am I driving you crazy to?

Is the driver on the computer desktop or on the USB stick?
In either case, it would not be located at C:\dell\drivers.
Point the installer to the driver by typing in the path or if given the choice, browse for the exact location of the driver.

I just tried downloading the file, using the first choice in the popup box, to my non-Dell XP computer and I got a 9+kb file. The actual file is 4MB. I think this will start the installation through the Dell website. Of course if you can't connect a computer to the internet, what good is a download that needs a connection to install.

I'm going to try the 2nd option and see what I get.

    Hi,
Been trying various things, I have navigated the resourse disk where the driver is click on this to install, I took note of instalation file which was Del\drivers4113. Then into device manager right click the yellow ? properties install driver the pop up wizard ask for file which I navigate to only to get the message cannot locate file.

I must be doing something wrong!!

Just a thought should I save the driver to the desktop?

    Hi Plodr

Well its been a pain but its done "YES" what I had done was I had downloaded the driver and unzipped it but I had to install it, I thought by unzipping it I had. So everything is running and good, we have internet and e-mail.

I wanted to ask you where to get the updates, I went on the microsoft site and it says no longer available any thoughts.
Also would you download a firewall for this system?

And by the way many thanks for holding out and helping me your input has been great don't know what I would have done without the support.:drool

Support for windows 2000 ended in July of 2010 so you won't find anything by using the windows updates.

Before you do anything, make an image (I like Acronis True Image) of the computer so you can restore it to its current working condition.

You might be able to get what you need by starting here
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx
put windows 2000 Security Updates in the search box. I got more that just securiyt updates but a lot less than the over 1000 hits by just typing windows 2000.
Click on the last updated column and it will sort by year and month with the oldest or the newest first. I usually start with the oldest.

I'd download all the 2002 security updates and put them on a USB stick or CD as data.
Keep going until you have all the years.

I had to do this from time to time because I helped senior citizens who were on dialup! I'd either bring their computer here and update it twice a year or I'd download to a jump drive and take the updates to their computer.

    Thanks Plodr,
I will start sorting that out, I am helping a friend but this has turned into a mammoth task!!.

Before I close, do you know of a free antivirus software I could download that will work on this win 2000 sp2 system, I have tried a couple and they wont work on it. If I can put antivirus on at least they can use it a little while I sort out the up-dates.

    Many thanks.;)

I have two win 2K computers in the house, going on the internet. I use Avira AntiVir on both with no problems.

I switched to 20 items in the list.
The first four items in that list are not for you.
    Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861) - YES
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Express Install for End Users - Yes
    the next three NO
Security Update for Windows 2000 (KB958644) - YES
.NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP - your choice I don't have .NET2 installed on my 2K computers
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Support Tools - optional
Update for daylight saving time changes in 2007 for Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 (KB 926666) - No, there were a lot of daylight saving time changes. I'd find one from 2010 not 2007
.NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL Security Update - only needed if you install .NET2, if you don't, it is not needed
    last 6 YES
