I am attempting to refurbish a dell dimension 5150 desktop. This computer is obsolete.:(
I wiped the hd, reinstalled win xp home edition, reinstalled all but one of the drivers in the order recommended on the dell website.
However, the network internet controller driver file suggested by dell is INPENUXP.cab. I am unfamiliar with cabinet files. This file consists of many compressed files. It asks me to suggest a folder to which to decompress these files individually.
I have no idea which or how many of these files are required, or where to place them.:cry :confused
I found another website which recommended the file R105478.exe for the network controller.
    :confused

I could not find specific info on this website regarding this problem.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    :):)

P.S. win xp home, 3.0GHz, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, single core.

You don't decompress cab files. There is an inf you point to, and it will handle that.

The .cab file you describe is merely a new manual. There is no driver software in it. I believe Dell chose to do it as a .cab file because a .zip file would have been much larger.

If you've installed R105478.exe, you've installed the driver.

The .cab file can be extracted to the same folder as the R105478 driver, usually C:\Dell\Drivers\R105478\

If you've installed R105478.exe, you've installed the driver.
---I installed R105478, to no avail.
---Wizard states that network software has not been installed.
Any further input would be appreciated.

Could there be some improper setting in BIOS?

    Perhaps this hd is shot?

I found this website that dealt with the problem you're having. The Intel chipset drivers aren't available at Dell's website for some unknown reason even though the 5150 came with an Intel ethernet NIC.

The Intel chipset drivers have to be installed before the one from Dell.

Take a look through the entire thread at that forum. It's not terribly long.

OK. What I did was download the INPENUXP.cab file to my computer. I then opened it by double clicking on it. I selected all the files and right clicked on one of the files and selected extract and extracted all the files to a folder on my Desktop named INPENUXP.

It is, infact, an HTML manual. The NIC used is an Intel PRO/100 VE. The driver for it IS available from the Dell Support site here. Select the topmost choice and install it BEFORE installing the R105478.

Hope this finally solves the issue.:)

If mdonah's advice doesn't work you can follow this

Start - Run type this mmc devmgmt.msc in blank - Ok - right click to yellow device - Properties - Details - scroll down the arrow finding Hardware ids - there is a code in the box , we need it ( select all - copy - paste ) the code here :wave

It has been suggested that my 5150 mob is croaking, and this network connection problem is just the first cough.
Also, device manager has ? beside Multimedia Video Controller as well.

I have accessed 10 different support groups, to no avail so far. Apparently, this is not a common problem.

The NIC is integrated into the mob. PCI network card is one option, ~$30. Replacement mob ~$70. No suggestion either would solve my problem.

Awaiting more suggestions. Perhaps refurbishment of this obsolete Dell desktop was unrealistic. :cry

    Any further input appreciated. :)

I'm sorry I wasn't able to help with this particular computer

If you're interested though, Dell has a manufacturer refurb of the same model here for $148.75. It comes with keyboard and mouse but no monitor or OS. If you want to, you can check it out as an option.

From what I have seen online, it appears that the NIC for that computer is the "Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection" which is a fairly common one.

If your version of XP doesn't have SP3 installed, I suggest having someone download and burn to CD the standalone version of the service pack so you can install it on the problem computer. That may help in resolving the issue. Also, have you tried to manually install drivers for the NIC? XP has a decent built in data base for common hardware . . . I've managed to resolve some odd driver issues that way, and in particular NIC and sound issues.

Once you are able to connect to windows update you will probably resolve your video issue as well.

--Video issue is my mistake. I installed PCI tv tuner card but have not installed the software due to mess with network connection.

Sorry, but I am retired and have no money to invest in another computer. Also, used computers are of dubious dependability--I am working with a used computer now.

Properties, details for 802.11n WLAN adapter:
    -Device instance ID USB\VID_050D&PID_1102\00E04000001
    -hardware ids:
    USB\VID_050d&Pid_1102&Rev0200
    USB\VID_050d&Pid_1102

    -Drivers not installed (code 28)

I hope all this has some significance.

Perhaps this particular post belongs in the lounge area, but...

I'm retired and disabled, myself, and am working with a used Dell Precision M70 workstation (laptop) that I recently replaced the system board on with a manufacturer refurbished system board because of problems with ALL of the USB ports on the original board.

Now my computer is fully functional because THIS month I purchased and installed a Bluetooth card and a floppy drive (I still have floppies rolleyes) which can either go into the drive bay of my DVD +/- RW or be connected via the supplied USB cable.

I, too, have to do things piecemeal. But, I like Dells because I can work on them, find parts for them and get what I can afford at the time. Most of the time, though, it's off of eBay.

That's not what I mean. Have you tried to go into Control Panel and manually "add a device" i.e. find the Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection in the list of hardware that XP home has drivers for, and "install" it.

I've had driver issues in the past that were solved in this way . . . especially with older hardware. In one instance with an old eMachines PC I was able to "add" the NIC, and while it wasn't the exact driver that NIC needed (XP grouched about it, lol) it did work well enough for me to connect to Windows Update which then found and installed the correct driver for me.

I'm not saying this will work for you, but it is an option to try. :)

B]--- I have downloaded/ installed NIC drivers from several different sources (Dell, MS, Intel, et al) to no avail.
    Will try your suggestion tomorrow.

I think the Intel NIC integrated to my mob is shot, and must purchase an NIC PCI card for network connection.[/B]
All other functions on this computer seem to be functioning normally. Get conflicting messages as to performance of NIC: "functioning normally", "software not installed". No wireless internet connection is listed.

I finally bit the bullet today and purchased a PCI NIC card, and installed it.
This solved the problem. Can now access Internet without difficulty. :)

Still don't understand two different messages-one indicating device was working properly, other stating that software had not been installed. But I suppose hardware and software are two separate items. :(

Thanx to all for your input, and sorry if I wasted your time.

You didn't waste our time. We all now know that your integrated NIC had gone screwy. What I now hope is that the NIC wasn't a harbinger of things to come.

    Best of luck. :)
