Hi, new to the site here looks like there is some real good info here. First off just to introduce myself, I am not going to claim to be the be all end all of computers, however I am MCDB, MCSE< Unix, Linux, and A+Net+ certified among other things. Feel free to talk to me in all the "techno" jargon you want.

I am having a very interesting problem that is totally stumpin me. Some of my drivers AND Microsoft Updates are somehow missing when I boot up. The drivers that keep dumping themselves are PCI Device, PCI Simple Communications Device(which I dont even need since I use a cable connection), and the USB Controllor.

Here is what we have going on. I will boot up and these drivers will be missing. I will update the driver and they will install fine. Everything looks peachy. When I power down and then the next time I power up those drivers are missing again. Also I keep getting notified that the same three updates from Microsoft are ready to be downloaded and installed. I haven't paid enough attention to know which updates are trying to be downloaded yet so I dont know which ones are being updated.

I have tried everything I can think of to see if I can find a resolution including but not limited to:
    POST
    MSCONFIG
    dxdiag.exe
    cacls
    chkdsk
    flashed the bios
    deleted cookies and history
    deleted temp files
    disk clean up
    disk defrag
    ran system mechanic professional 6
    adware
    spybot
    winxp manager
    mcafee antivirus
    registry mechanic

    Any body have any ideas?

The MS updates that get stuck in a loop can be generally resolved if your using Microsoft/Windows updates to download & install them, by downloading the actual installer files and manually installing the updates, once you have the KB# of the updates you can either google them or visit http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

once installed MS/Windows update again and hopefully they shouldnt be their any more, you may have some new ones if as in some cases one update needs to be installed before another newer one can.

as to the drivers, not honestly thinking of what could have gone amiss with those at present, but a few further questions may jog my thoughts or someone elses,

    1. I know you have XP but what SP version?
    2. Was this a clean install of XP or an Upgrade?
    3. Has it always been doing this since install, if not what may have changed if you can remember in regards to installed software?
    4. Is this a Desktop or Laptop if OEM what brand and model? if home build what Mobo make and model?

    Hey thanks for the reply.
    1. XP SP 2
    2. Clean
    3. Since reformat no new software changes that werent there before
    4. This particular computer is not home made. That is usually how I go since it is so much cheaper to build it myself. You get more bang for the buck you know what I mean. However this was a great steal so I had to pick it up. It is a gateway 505gr.
