    Greetings...

Just built my new system, put WinXP Pro SP2 on it, all the updates, etc., when suddenly I realized my "Empty Recycle Bin" sound wasn't working. I know it's not a big deal, but it's annoying. All other sounds work fine. I've tried every fix I could find on the topic, but no help. I have tried restoring original Windows Sound Scheme, other sounds, repairing Recycle Bin, etc.

    As for other posted fixes:
I have Nero, but the reg value causing troubles is fine.
Tried: Sounds to none, reboot, Windows Default, reboot, custom sound, reboot. No luck.
Covered 3 different MS articles on sound issues, none helped.

The sound file is good, and all otehr sound on my system is fine. I did read in a couple of places that apprently some Windows Update messes with Windows Sound Schemes... but that's about all I can think of.

Please, if anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!

If you open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Windows\Media folder do you see a wave file named Windows XP Recycle.wav?
I know it is a simple thing but without this sound file, emptying the Recycle Bin could not make any sound at all.
Second, open Registry: START > RUN > regedit > OK

And do a search for Recycle.wav, normally there should be a dozen entires listed, 2 under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and 10 under HKEY_USERS make sure that is indeed the case, re-post and let us know.

    1. I am using a custom sound for Empty Recycle Bin

    2. All reg entries seem to be in place.

Hate to argue but if #1 is true then #2 can not be since it would modify certain registry settings, so your problem could be either the changes that were done or the custom sound scheme you are using. What happens if you change it back to 'default' one?

Yes, sorry, there is not the exact number of reg entries unless I switch back to the default scheme. I have even used the repair Sound Schemes fix from Kelly's Korner but still no joy. It doesn't seem to matter what sound I assign, it won't play... the RB works fine, and all the other sound files work fine, just not that one.

I appreciate you replying though, and am open to any further help. :)

Do you have Norton's Utilities or System Works installed?

They both have a Protected Recycle Bin function that can effect some settings.
