I recently reformatted and repartitioned my hard drive due to some malicious trojans or something that was being pesky and hard to remove the tradionional way, rolleyes anyway, i used my 7 recovery cds that i made when i got my machine. on disk 6 and 7 there were a couple of bad sectors on the discs and 2 or 3 dat files were skipped. now i find that my virus scans alert me they are missing. windows is running ok, how do i get some kind of scan that will detect the missing files and replace them where they need to go? the files that were reported are these:

C:/windows/system32/drivers/sunkfiltp.sys located in this registry key: hklm/system/currentcontrolset/services/sunkfiltp

    and

C:/windows/system32/drivers/wanatw4.sys located in this registry key: hklm/system/currentcontrolset/services/wanatw

any help with this will be appreciated. and rewarded with pulsing heart eye emoticons :D

Hi nestlegrl, welcome to Major Geeks

The legitimate file runs a multimedia card reader. Do you have one and does it work?

The legitimate file is part of AOL. Do you use AOL?

Both files are known to be substituted by virus/trojans so this may be why the AV is reporting them.

well, i have a card reader, but i dont have a card right now to see if it is working. I actually have 3 card ports. And while AOL came with the windows software automatically and u cant erase it completely from the add and remove programs, no i dont use it at all. only those two are showing up, but my system is being very very unstable, and is shutting down without any reason. I mean powering off as if there was a power failure. Not shutting down at all. I have a new power supply, and its a 350 or 400. Its more than the 250 that came with the system, and i have added nothing to the machine to make it need any more power than that. I thought it had to be because of the software and the damaged restore cd. could it be missing something else software wise to make it act this way? I thought about just running linux in it. Btw, does anyone know if u can use yahoo messenger from linux? sorry i tend to ramble when im very confused.confused thanks for your input very much.

You have replaced the power supply?

    Is you pc an Emchines?
Do you still have the old supply
Does the new supply have a white wire connecting to the motherboard or is one space in the 20/24 way connector blank?

Yes i have the old supply, the 4 prong was all burned where it connected to the motherboard. so, i replaced both the motherboard and the powersupply at the same time. It has run fine for 5 months.

the new supply connects to the motherboard with 2 yellow wires and 2 black ones on a 4 prong pin, and the 24 connector has no blank spaces. (but it does have a white wire, among other colors)

No its not an e-machine, its a gateway 508 ge, (not sure if that makes any difference.)

the new motherboard that came from augsburg germany is exactly the same as one that came from gateway, except that there are some extra usb ports on the Gateway motherboard, so i couldnt plug 2 usb ports into the motherboard. they were the funny shaped ports with one rounded end and one squared end like on the back of a printer except longer, i never had any use for them anyway.

So is the erratic behaviour new?
Why do you connect it with the power supply & motherboard replacement?
I asked about the white wire because it is not used in most modern systems, except E-machines, which has an under specified 250W supply that is notorious for failing. Did you original Gateway supply have this wire? If not, having one could be the cause of instability.

Once we have sorted out the power supply issues we can look at the missing card reader drivers. Can you identify which CD they were on an have you tried cleaning the CD?

well, i dont really relate it to the new motherboard and powersupply, (its just strange that software can make your computer shut off like that; i would have thought it might just hang up) i just wonder why my recovery suddenly wouldnt load anymore (it had built in recovery, hence the 7 burned recovery discs), the damaged disc is disc #6, i have no idea really exactly what is on it. when you look at it from my computer, you get one file icon and the number of bytes it has, thats it. I have cleaned all the discs but the damage on that disc is under the surface. i can see it i have no idea how it got there. ( i am only assuming that this is why it wont load completely)

i just got a new dell, and i got a windows vista disc with it. can i load that onto the gateway? maybe that will solve everything.

the eratic behavior began when my son downloaded a virus and i tried to use the built in recovery (not system restore). It didnt work, when i booted, it said a config file was missing, so i used my 7 recovery discs. that didnt work because of the 6th disc, i think, and then i decided to delete my partitions reset them, wipe the drive completely and try again.

i dont know if the old power supply had a white wire or not, i will have to check, but when i replaced the old ps, i upgraded it. i think i had a 250 but now i have a 350. i figured u could never have too much power.:D

Studiot is very good at sorting file problems- and his knowledge on the wiring is very good- follow any advice he gives you.
You cannot load Vista CD onto the old machine, and keep it, as it is registered to the Dell- and I have no doubt it might load, but be useles to keep, after the 30 day period (I think it has same as XP)
If you have another Windows CD and it is the same as whatever you had on the old computer,(2000, or, XP), you could go to start, run,
and type in sfc /scannow to replace corrupted Windows files- but we need to know if which is your operating system.
You can also, (if you do not have a compatable/original CD), go to start, run, and type in CHKDSK /F , OR, CHKDSK /R, but as for AOL, you should be able to uninstall from add and remove programs, unless you back up discs have corrupted a Windows file, which is why I suggested the sfc /scannow - I believe that the card reader is available as an update from microsoft updates, unless it is a third party driver.
When I have removed AOL, I had to remove several layers of it, as it asked which one you wanted to remove- again, if Windows files are corrupted , you might find the problem removing it.

So try an overnight soak test.

If you have a floppy drive on the Gateway
Download a boot floppy and run the pc from it.

    www.bootdisk.com

Leave it running overnight and see if it crashes.
If it does it may be worth downloading MEMtest from Major Geeks to another floppy and testing the memory.

That way you will eventually a working system before trying to load a full operating system.

If you don't have a floppy drive just boot into the bios an leave it runnning there.
