Missing hal.ddl

    hi ive been trying to use a copy of Windows XP i got with a laptop i bought a few years back on an old desktop im trying to fix up
    but after the setup is finished copying files it says

    windows can not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.ddl
    Please re-install a copy of the above file.

    i dont know what to do can anyone help? Q.Q

    software is licensed to the laptop, xp home can be had cheap, or try a linux live cd like pclos or puppy, to name a few that are easy on the old noodle
