I recently got a computer from a friend. Hooked it up and noticed the memory was running in single channel, when I went to stick the memory in the right channel, I discovered one of the four DIMM channel" clip bracket lock little plastic thing that keeps the memory in the board things, the two usually white pieces at each end of the memory slot" was missing, both of them for one channel. I was hoping to upgrade the computer's memory but this presents an issue. I haven't investigated/experimented into replacing the clips, I have other motherboards laying around to try it on but I was mainly just curious if anyone had any experience or luck mending this issue. Of course I googled and did what I could to try and find information, might just be screwed.

    Hi Phalxor,

I have successfully replaced the clips. The 'new' ones were taken from a scrap MB that had the same sockets. Have also run successfully with clips missing. Never caused a problem but probably not a good idea. Most socket grip the mem very tightly. Not all.

    Good Luck, Jim

    Hi again.

Come to think of it - those clips are more for helping you to get the mem out than to hold it in. Should be OK but be careful pulling the mem out of the sockets.

right on good to hear you've had luck. any advice as to the procedure of removing and installing these clips, or is pretty much just gentle pulling and wiggling?

    Hi again Phalxor,

There are several different types but most are just a matter of looking closely. You will usually see where to compress the legs with the hinge pins to get them out and back in. I just checked about 6 boards. Most are as I described. Several are completely different and it is not obvious how they come out. If the scrap board is really scrap I would break the plastic of the socket to get the clip out. You then should be able to see how they work.

    More good Luck, Jim
