Am trying to resurrect a my father-in-laws XP Pro machine that will not boot into Windows. It hangs during boot @ "missing or corrupt system32\Drivers\SbAlg.sys"

Safe mode doesn't get past this, nor does "boot to last known good configuration." I have UBCD4WIN and can boot into that. I also have an XP system CD if necessary. I ran Spybot under UBCD4WIN and SuperAntiSpyware... both found different things...:cry

I looked on the drive and couldn't find sbalg.sys anywhere, even in the \i386 folder.

When it last booted, it had Windows Security Essentials on it. We had identified some infections and used the Windows offline tool to disinfect. It was able to boot post that, but apparently we didn't get everything.

I have seen some references online to McAfee in regard to this error, and it is possible that at some point he did have McAfee on there, which may not have been uninstalled properly. I understand that there's a MCPR tool. Can I run this from UBCD4WIN?

    Any feedback/advice is appreciated...
