Missing or Corrupt windows files

As of today, as a great Xmas present from the great HP laptop demon, my wifes laptop had a melt down.

It will not boot into any windows application, it simply states Could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I cannot seem to find the Setup CD that came with it as the computer is at least a year old.

If anyone can assist me in how to make a repair disk, or something similar that would be great. The Laptop is an HP Pavillion dv1000 and has no floppy drive, just the cd-rom.

I have tried a set of disks I found but they are not for her computer. I have tried looking on the net, but cannot find anything on how to create a repair/boot cd.
