    Well I have a Dell computer running windows 10 64bit, with a intel pentium cpu21274 1.9ghz (64bit)
4gb of ram, running avg ultimate as security. I have a problem with my internet. I could connect to our wireless router, and it said I was connected to the internet, but I could not get anywhere (too long to respond messages in Chrome). I tried resetting my router, no change. My computer is the only one with a problem so I tried troubleshooting. The error came up saying some network protocols are missing on this computer. I used one of our other computers and searched fixes for the problem and so far none have worked. Here is what I've tried.

    Command prompt(admin)
    entered netsh int ipv4 install
    (restarted computer)
    No change

    Command prompt (admin)
entered netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
    (Restart computer)
    No change

    Command prompt (admin)
    entered netsh winsock reset
    (restart computer)
    No change

went to network and sharing center
    click on internet then properties
    install
    protocol
    add
    have drive
    (typed) C:\windows\inf
    clicked ok
got error message saying I couldn't install due to workgroup rules.

so considering nothing has worked, I have come here to you gurus of computer wisdom to walk me through how to fix this. any help is appreciated.

Have you gone to the Dell Support site, entered your Service Tag number or let the site automatically detect your machine and then gone to the Drivers and download page. There may be updated versions of drivers that were released after the computer was shipped. It's happened with my four Dells.

According to his opening post, he cannot get out to the Internet so it would seem he could not get to Dell's support site.

@bionicmonkey - A lot of people have had problems with AVG after upgrading to W10. I recommend you uninstall AVG then reboot. This should re-enable Windows own Windows Defender so you will remain protected. Then see if you have access. If you do, then you might just consider keeping Windows Defender since it is fully capable of keeping your computer secure. It is what I use, along with Windows Firewall on all my systems here.

Digerati! thank you. It worked. Apparently AVG must have been doing something, cause I can now use my own computer to post my thanks. Internet is back and working proper. Again thank you. And also love the Darkwing Duck avatar.

Great! Glad it worked. And thanks about my avatar.

Oddly, I have had a few posters say it makes "me" look angry. I think it is a determined look, not angry. At any rate, I like it too. Thanks.

As I noted above, you may just want to keep Windows Defender (WD). It works and is considerably less demanding on system resources. And of course, it is free and does not bug you to buy a pro version either. Or you could try installing AVG from scratch again. That may be all it needed to give you access.

Either way, regardless your security of choice, you should have a secondary scanner just to make sure you (the user is always the weakest link in security) or your primary scanner did not let something slip by. I use and recommend Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM) for that (though MBAM has never found that anything did slip by :) ).

He could have with the computer he's posting with.

If entering the service tag, yes. I guess I was responding more to your suggestion to let the Dell site detect and scan the computer. That would not do any good if using a different computer. I should have been more clear.
