I have a Dell Dimensions 8100 running Windows XP home.
My daughter has a program on her computer called sound recorder which is part of windows. I went to my control panel, clicked add/remove and then clicked on add/remove Windows components. Under accessories and utilities there is no multimedia file, which is where I have been told I would find the program. When I click start and go to my program list, under entertainment only Real Player and Windows Media player are listed. I wish to make a wav. file. I do have a microphone, sound card and speakers. Please advise how I can install the program Sound Recorder. Thanks, Diane

    Still missing sound recorder

Hi thanks for your time. My problem is when I do what you advised there is no sound recorder listed, only Real Player and Windows media player. Also I went to my control panel, clicked add/remove and then clicked on add/remove Windows components. Under accessories and utilities there is no multimedia file, which is where I have been told I would find the program. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

    Just a thought...

Look in C:\Windows\System32 for the file sndrec32.exe. If it's there, then you can create a shortcut to it and use it normally.

If it's not there check for it in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache and copy it to your System32 folder.

    Still Missing Sound Recorder

There is no file sndrec32.exe. I found a dllcatch file in C:\Windows\Lastgood\sys32 but not in C:\Windows\sys32\. Is that the same file and if so what happens next.
There is any way I could install just that file from the Windows XP cd is there? Could I copy the sndrec32.exe from another computer and install it?
Thanks for any help offered. Diane

    Diane,
Look in the C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder for the sndrec32.exe file. If it's there copy it to your C:\Windows\System32 folder, if it's not there see below.
Yes, you can copy it from another XP machine if one is available.

Another way is to Start > Run > (type in) sfc /scannow, hit Enter, and have your XP CD ready. All missing/corrupt protected system files will be restored.

I've heard that Sound Recorder in Windows XP is limited to 60 seconds of sound (to prevent CD ripping, of all things). If you plan on making a recording longer than that, you'll need a different program. I'd recommend Audacity, which is free. Audacity is also a sound editor, which could make things even easier, in theory.

Thanks for your suggestion. When I tried to do this it said I must have Windows XP Professional, I only have the Home edition.

Which suggestion did you try that gave you this message?

By any chance do you have XP pro on your PC but your CD is XP home?

Have heard of this strange behavior (WinXP Home Prompts for the install cd for WinXP Pro at SFC), usually the problem is solved by inserting the install cd before starting the SFC (Though some times one have to press Retry a few times)

No, I installed XP home from the CD that it doesn't recognize.
I got a copy of the sound recorder exe. file and installed it and I finally have the program.
    Thanks for all your help.

I also went to Dell's site and there was a question about not being able to remove or install certain window componets. They advised that the Sysoc, ini file should be edited. I removed the "hide"after the MultiM component and went to Control panel and clicked Accessories & utilities and I then could see the multimedia subcomponent and Sound Recorder. I tried to install it and when it prompted me to insert my XP cd, it didn't recognize it. I gave up and installed the sound recorder exe file from another computer and I now have the program. I thank everyone for there time and info given to me in trying to solve this. I wonder if the cd is ok. I never tried to insert it after I did the install. Diane
