missing system file

My laptop won't boot it says missing or corrupt file c:\windows\system32\config\system. I can boot from my XP CD, byt if I try repair, it says it will reinstall windows, thus losing my files. I can boot to a DOS like screen. Any ideas? How can I recover the system file?

 

See if you can run System File Checker from the DOS command window. (You can get there from the disc, which you will need inserted, anyway)
Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
This will compare your OS files to the OS files on your OS disc (or Recovery Partition) and repair or replace any missing or corrupt files, without affecting your personal files. (Music, Photos, Apps, etc.)

 

This is a registry (hive) issue and requires some fancy footwork to fix.

When you boot can you get to the boot options screen by hitting F8 before Windows starts?

Try selecting the option

'Last Known Good Configuration'

 

Thanks... I can see all the options by pressing f8, but none of them work.

Both links have VERY precise directions and step-by-step details for possible fixes. Be sure to type all the commands very carefully. A typo could be quite problematic. Read through both links slowly. Then read them again. Then print them out. Then read them again. Now, have a beer, and read them again. :drink
