missing System Restore

When trying to do a system restore, I get box saying"System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close". Go to Computer Properties to check status and get a box saying something about "runDLL as an App". Went to start,run,services.msc.Shows that System Restore is set at automatic and started.Worked fine about 4 days ago when I created a restore point. What has happened? Only new programs installed were Internet Explorer 7,Microsoft Malicious Software Tool, And Windows Defender.:confused Those should not cause that(would they).Somebody HELP please.Thanks in advance.

Hello oma. Yes, I have XP. Went to site as directed. Did as directed. After about 45 minutes for scannow to do its thing, I am still where I was with no System Restore. About ready to do a format and re-install, much as I would hate to.Appreciate the time,concern and your response on this.
